Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
Alright well I've been looking through the junkyards for a turbo and they are all gone or non turbo eclipses, probes, talons, ect. So today I walked about 20 feet in and there was a 2.2 Ford Turbo just tossed on the lot. So i walked over to check and it's all there. I forgot my metrics so I couldn't do much and it was closing time but I am going back tommorow at 9:00AM so that I can get all of what I want. This turbo is most likely going to be put on my '91 2.5 4cyl GMC Sonoma cuz I figured it'd be a good first homemadeturbo project to do. I'm taking the turbo and intercooler but what else should I get? What else could I use from the Probe on this turbo project for my Sonoma? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

that turbo is way too small. period.

Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
I dont think so IMO.
In a truck id expect you want some low end torque. This turbo will do just that. And thats all lol. |
Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
I would think the smaller turbo the lower rpm it will spool at which is ideal for my little pickup especially since it is an automatic. I'm just looking to try my first homemadeturbo and gain some power to my truck.

The injectors would also be a good thing to grab off of that 2.2, I have no idea if they'll fit your engine, but as long as it's cheap/free for you to grab them, you can always sell 'em later. |

Injectors hide themselves well in your pockets... ;D

Lightbulbs and lugnuts however, are a whole 'nother story... |

Unless you're dead set on using that little thing, check for shaft play and cracks! You guys are funny with your pocketing things, at my pick and pulls just load up a bag/armfull and say $20. Doesn't make a difference much of the time and it's legit. |
Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
hell I jack turbo's from my yard. only thing I've paid for was my LS engine for 150. They've gotten enough ---- from me. I think like 4 cars so they got their money's worth outta me so it's payback time. 8)

Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
too small, I get insta boost with my 1.6L Toyota and one of those turbos. It made a 166 WHP@7000rpm at 7.5psi on stock actuator, with biggish cams.
I suppose it would work OK if your operating range is under 6000 max rpm, if you can make boost at idle tho, it's definitely too small, the last thing you want is to be boosting all the time, that sucker will overheat and kill be bearings in no time and you'll be starting over again. Also you are very limited for upgrade options, which can be a PITA if you invest a bunch of time and money into a setup that requires a particular turbo. I'd keep looking if I were you and get something off a Volvo, Saab or Audi, in a T3 or T4, I'd even consider a Chrysler T3 if I were you before grabbing the Probe turbo. Neil |
Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
I dont know, it would probably be good for like 50 pounds of torque in the 2-3k RPM range.
Sounds like that what he wants so it would be perfect for him. |
Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
Well my engine supposedly only has a redline around 5000 RPM so I won't be revving it very high. Yes boost in the 2500-5000 RPM range would be ideal for my setup and goals. But anyway I went ahead and pulled the ---- off today. I got Turbo, Manifold, DP, Intercooler, and Injectors for $100 and since I don't need the injectors I can seel them on ebay for hopefully $35 or so and then sen the manifold for maybe $15 so I should only be into this project $50. The turbo is in good shape with no shaftplay, spins beautifully, and no cracks that I have found. Now I need to get a manifold fabbed, oil lines and stuff, maybe a bigger inject with fuel tuning on the ecm, and then get a 3" exhaust made. I'm thinkin just going 3" straight pipe. I'll have pictures up tommorow.

Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
be careful going too big on the exhaust, those little IHI like to spike, the bigger the exhaust the more they seem to spike, 2.25" or 2.5" would be plenty big, I think the factory Probe turbo only had 2" or maybe 2-1/8"

Alright here is some pics i took.

Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
You guys are funny saying that the VJ11 is too small when I dynoed about 100 hp more than any of your Honda's with the same turbo on 16 psi. It's an excellant entry level turbo. The RHB5 VJ11 only has an exhaust side A/R of .27
The turbine has an exducer diameter of 42.40 mm and a inducer of 51.80 mm making it a 67 trim turbine. The compressor side has an inducer of 36 mm and an exducer of 52.50 mm making it a 47 trim. You also have the option of upgrading the compressor housing and wheel from the Warner Ishi/IHI from the 87-88 T Bird. If you need rebuild advice, click here: http://www.mx6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102559 Info on the hybrid is here: http://www.mx6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129439 BTW- those injectors are 360cc injectors at their peak, they're high impedance as well. 73-90cc/15sec |
Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
its too small for alot of the stuff people are doing on here... most people are trying to make 220 hp or so at 7500 rpm+ or nearly 300hp on some b series spinning to 8500, you will def run out of flow with it in those situations, but using it on a truck should work pretty good, itll spool right off idle and get you boosting and adding power right where you need it, should work fine.
|
Re: Ford Probe 2.2 Turbo at Junkyard
Exactly, for his application it should work fine and is an excellant entry level turbo that you won't have to empty your wallet on dyno time/test and tune with.
