FooK's Old School Civic Turbo Project Thread (no 56k)
 

This is for the purpose of the projects section, put me up near the top Johnny! If any of the pics don't work, let me know.

Ok so last spring I built this setup.

At random I happened to pick up this turbo and hf manifold setup, for next to no money at all. It's a td05h-14b from a Mitsubishi.

I decided to go ahead and install a kit on my 95 coupe

So I started gathering the parts I decided to use.

DSM 450cc injectors

I then found an HMT member with a blitz dd bov, and built a flange for it

I picked up this nice HMT boost controller, but then when we did AbaZ's ZC install, I ended up handing it to him for 20 bucks.

Tunertoys supplied me with a set of 4 couplers with clamps, then I traded Craig the dsm 02 housing from the 14b for a transition coupler from 2"-2½"

Also as you see above, I ended up cutting up the stoick dsm compressor outlet elbow to point the way I needed it to.

I also had this in with my order to Tunertoys, its your basic stealthmode 14b/t25 oil line kit. Beware on these, the fitting for a 14b is metric, and the fitting in the stealthmode kit is not. It's an impossible fitting to find, and you can make this one work, but most of the time you end up with leaks, I ran this for a short time, and then I ended up welding the fitting to the dsm banjo fitting, and using that, works flawlessly. You can get them premade at like anplumbing.com or an-plumbing.com or something like that.

Grabbed a Spearco boost gauge, I still had my Autometer one from my old GReddy setup, but I decided to switch it up.

Next it was time to do some mock-up's and get the downpipe and intercooler piping done. Again I turn to Tunertoys for some mandrel bends, BMC race for some flanges, and some o2 bungs that I ordered with my Wideband Controller. I also ended up visiting a local Midas for the 2 bolt flange and the donut gasket that seals it all up. I chose when I built the downpipe to run it open dumptube. All piping for intercooler and downpipe were 2½" and the dumptube came from an extra manifold bend and a piece of thick ass DOM .120W 1.75" round tube, that was used in a rollcage I helped build in a Bronco.

Flexpipe thanks to Steve (88dx). This was also my first bout with a welder, so it was rough, I ended up sanding most of it smooth.

In the end I sprayed it with a black coating from VHT, designed for manifolds and extreme temps to 2000 degrees F

The piping was relatively easy, it was also ground smooth in the end, this thin metal is really hard to not burn through when you're using weld wire designed for thick stuff when you're building jeep accessories.

Got the BOV flange I made welded in, and coated this stuff with some Duplicolor wheel paint I had laying around

I also had the intercooler mounted when I built the piping, it sat a little low, I needed to remove the bumper support and raise it, but never got around to it.

The car already had a clutch in it from my last buildup. It was an ACT HDSS that I got from mycrx when I did my GReddy setup. I'd guess the car was making 220whp@12psi give or take, and it never really slipped til I started grabbing the Dave Lee dirty seconds on DR's

Either way I had this XTSS 4 puck as a backup if I ever needed it, which I never did. I got this from Rota92, it was used in his old setup.

Next it was time to get some management going on, picked up an ebay special laptop, and spent $279 on a Zeitronix ZT-2. Following AbaZ's suggestion for making it mobile, I decided to power it through a cigarette lighter.

So now I have all my parts, I have my wideband and tuning gear, and it is time for install. So one saturday with the help of Alec (CivicZC) and my friend Jeff Love, we tossed everything on, and went to town.

I ended up not using the stealthmode fitting on the oil pan, I had a dented pan anyways, so I bought another, and had a mild steel bung welded on in advance.

Everything went pretty smooth, cept for a few bugs. The first was the dsm internal wastegate wouldnt stay shut, I fought that one to the bitter end, even broke one, and never got that thing to work perfectly. Before I sold the car I had bought an Audi External that I was going to add on, but never did.

After this I tossed a set of piston ringlands of course, and did a quick piston swap. I ran it like that until it was sold. The car did a best of 13.6@100mph on some shitty 20x8" slicks with a 2.0 60ft, and did 13.7 on drag radials with a 2.1 60ft.

I had alot of fun with this kit, in the end I would do things differently, I fought that oil return through 3 different return lines, because it would back up on uphill slopes really badly. I think using a log manifold instead would've yielded me better result, but oh well.

Also, i think the dsm turbo was just too small. I really enjoy a good top end powerband, and the 14b while better than the smaller stuff, still just didnt cut it for me.

I also wouldve liked to have gotten that external wastegate installed, internals suck ass, and always will suck ass. Maybe they suit people ok when you're running 5-8psi, but past that it just couldnt regulate for ----.

Nice. :y What was your best on Street tires? 60'? 1/4? Trap? If you can recall. Nice though for sure. Clean. ;) ;D

it was like 13.9@101 or something, probably a 2.2 60 ft.

but you can kinda count the 13.7@100 as street tires, i drove on the dr's every day.

I gotta get hold of a friend who is basically gonna hand me a large portion of parts, it will take me a while to get it all set up, but I'd definitely like to do an install day.

Right now I am working on a deal to trade my VAFC that came in this hatchback for a t3 60/63, stealthmode lines, 450's, resistor box, bunch of couplers, new rfl bov in box. He's getting out of everything and for whatever reason wants that AFC, he's just kinda hard to get hold of sometimes. Plus I still have to get it out of my car. That will put a good dent in the parts needed and then I can start in on building a manifold and such.

Hardest part right now is that I dont have a shop, so its hard to do ----.

nice. looks very close to what im putting together. but that 14b makes me wonder if i should just sell it and get a 16g. especially if you say its weaksauce in the upper-end.
