flywheel w/ boost? do you guys run lightened flywheels?

do you guys run lightened flywheels? is there any improvement or should i stick with stock?91 4dr integra(heavy as hell)

Re: flywheel w/ boost? do you guys run lightened flywheels?

not sure about this one but i would think you would want to keep the heavier flywheel to give you more load on the engine at lower rpm's to spool the turbo. not really sure though

there has always been mixed opinions on this matter... i couldnt tell you witch is better

Don't use clutchmasters flywheels please

I like that my car revs faster, but a lot of people say the heavier flywheel has more rotating mass. Lighter means it slows down quicker. Heavier means is slows down slower.

Or something-something... :P

quicker acceleration...quicker deceleration. i like mine. better torque...less rotating mass. i still spool up quick.

id go for lighter.....once your clutch is out your car is the mass not the flywheel. so shave that bitch like a lamb that owes you money!! >:D

word... i like my 8lb flywheel... revs super quick and on top of the weight savings, i dont have an extra 15lb of rotating mass to accelerate too

Re: flywheel w/ boost? do you guys run lightened flywheels?

thanx for the replies cuz i was thinkin if it revs faster wont i reach boost faster?

Re: flywheel w/ boost? do you guys run lightened flywheels?

id like to think so, because the car will be faster... but people will argue that the increased load of the heavy flywheel will help you build boost faster... these are the same people that will tell you that your dx trannies are better for turbo than say... an si trans gear ratios "because you stay in boost longer" ... its bs. If it makes you go faster N/A, the general concept will help you go faster when boosted too.

i heard on boosted cars you loose tq with a lighter flywheel

turbos build torque

I cant believe some of the dipshit comments some people make about how things are differnet when your boosted. Why would the pressure in your intake manifold change the physics of rotating mass.

A flywheel is a mass that keeps your engine from speeding up and slowing down. This is a bad thing if your engine is accelerating and a good thing if your engine is slowing down (bogging your engine at a light and stalling). When your at idle, your not boosted so a lightened flywheel on a boosted car is like a lightened flywheel on a NA car. Drivability is your only consideration. Can youu stand having to rev it when finding a parking space.

A lightened flywheel will build boost faster. Your engine is at a higher RPM so it will be injesting more air->more exhaust->more boost

Like i said i only heard that, and it came from one of the guys at JRP. I found it hard to believe myself, but i was advised by JRP against using a lighten flywheel on my boosted b18c

Or even worse use a lightened flywheel!

A light-er flywheel is a different story.

JRP are complete ass clowns. dont listen to them.

my a6 has a lightened flywheel, daily driver, I'ts not that bad. you just have to keep the revs around 2k til its in first gear. but she revs like a sportbike.

Re: flywheel w/ boost? do you guys run lightened flywheels?

a lightened fly wheel would def. help you build boost faster...but i wouldnt go with anything lighter than 11 lbs for the flywheel...lower than that it's really touchy on the street...you jerk all over the place

look, on a dyno a stock ___ and stock ___ with a lightened flywheel will have diff fuel curves and diff torq. the stock flywheel will have more torq because torq is roatating mass, trucks (my truck for example) had a 33 lb flywheel, the wheel torq is 152 and the wheel hp is about 115. thats because the roatation of the flywheel is so heavy that well it uses momentem. now with a lighter flywheel you WILL loose torq and you WILL NOT gain hp, your fuel curve will be diff though because you will be able to rev up faster, so basicly your curve will be angled more then stock. The only think you have to worry about with boost and a lightened flywheel would be the flywheel falling apart. the stock one is made out of thick material (steel) and the new one (mine anyways) is made of aluminum. aluminum is alot weaker then steel. if you run to much psi daily (roomers about 22+ psi on a large t4) your flywheel may actualy rip apart. Most of us however dont run 22+ daily so there should be no problem. hope it helps you all with your flywheel questions.

Re: flywheel w/ boost? do you guys run lightened flywheels?

(not quite sure)

if its lighter could it mean theres less friction on the crankshaft etc with other components, which could mean the the crankshaft and rods can spin faster and more efficientely so wouldnt that mean that the turbo would spool slightly quicker with a lighter one?

LOL - yes i talk absolute sh*t
