first time turbo. breather question!
 

Hey guys. I have been reading on this site for almost a year now and I finally got my turbo installed this week. I have a t-25 running 8psi, hack on 450s, johnny-intercooler, A6 block Y8 head, Im loving the boost but after driving for awhile i get smoke out my breather filter on my valve cover. I just got done driving on the highway for about 20 min and now my breather filter is wet with oil and still smoking a little. Is this just blowby? Any help would be great! thanks

Oh boy! its your rings or ringlands. Do a compression test and see what cylinder or cylinders has low compression. if your motor has lots of miles its most likely your rings but if fairly new its the ringlands. Do you have smoke coming out of your dipstick? I just replaced my rings and one piston last nite because of blown ringland which caused major blow-bys. so good by too your bottom end or buy new or decent pistons and rings and you should be alright installation is staright forward. Me and Trance minister did it yesturday.

Hey Boost n Ls,

I was just curious. Can you just take off the oil pan and access what you need from there to do this by ripping out the crank with rods + pistons attached?

No in order to install the pistons, they have to go through the top of the block, becuase you have to decompress the rings, there isnt a way to do that pulling them out from the bottom.

taking the head off is a must, pistons and rods come out one way and put in one way, from the top. isn't really that hard, take head off(if its dohc you have more work to do cause of cam bearings too take off to access head bolts. once head is off, just drop pan, oil pick-up,and two 12mm rod cap nuts and push the pistontowards the top and it will pop out. too put it in must have ring compressor (10 bucks) borrow or if u got one a cylinder hone tool, thats if your walls are in good shape and assuming its just your piston rings or ringlands that are damaged. it saves time and money than buying another block or letting someone else do it. Plus you don't have too take the motor out so thats a big time saver. Good luck!

I went to the dyno today and my breather started pouring smoke out at full boost. So I ordered a set of rings and Ill be installing them sometime next week. Untill then little or no boost for me. what grit do I hone with?

hey guys.. plenty of great info but has anyone thought about this poster's PCV system?

It could be as simple as that, replace the inlet to before the turbo.. not after the turbo like it was NA

Or just remove your PCV and replace it with a small air filter, or catch can and air filter if you get a lot of blow-by.

I have a cheap autozone breather filter on my valve cover. and my number one cylinder is 30-40 psi different than the rest.

yeah, number one is toast.

Put a breather on the valve cover is just a simplification method. What you need to do is hook the PCV valve that is located on the back of the block up to an intake port that is BEFORE the turbo piece. That is the way it's supposed to go on a B series, I don't really like to work on shitty D series motors. There is a thread in the hybrid/tech section of this website where I posted the proper procedure. If you're still having problems then I shall dig it up for you.
