First post, dumb newby question.

I have a frozen MHI TD04L-10T from my Cummins B3.3T turbo diesel. I want to upgrade to a TD04L-13T from a Subaru Impreza. My turbo has a T25 flange which is not compatible with the Subaru flange. I'm assuming that both TD04L hot sides use the same turbine wheel. Is that correct? Can I simply swap hot side housings to adapt the Subaru turbo to my Cummins diesel flange?

What should I pay for a used Subaru turbo?

Thanks,

Hi everyone. Lots of people have looked at this (thank you) but no one has responded. Maybe I asked a really tough question or, more likely, the way I stated the question is confusing. I'll try to be more clear.

Can I use the hot side housing from my TD04L-10T on the CHRA of a TD04L-13T? As best as I can tell the turbine wheels should be exactly the same so, I'm assuming, the hot side housings should interchange.

Hope that makes the question more clear.

It is not advised to swap turbo parts with another as there balanced. Best bet is to have your turbo rebuilt. It will save you a lot of trouble.

Thanks for the reply Busa4. In my case the CHRA would remain intact. So, I'm assuming the balance would not be disturbed.

I'm interested in putting my TD04L exhaust housing with its T25 flange on the Subura turbo in place of the stock Subura exhaust housing, which, has a proprietary Subura mounting flange. My turbo and the Subura turbo are both TD04L hot sides with different compressor sides. I want to swap just the housings, not the turbine wheels.

As best as I can tell MHI's TD04L designation describes the turbine wheel dimensions. If both turbos use the same turbine wheel shouldn't I be able to swap the housings without causing any problems?

Thanks for your help,

You should be able to swap them but if there is a fraction of a millimeter size difference in wheels then bad things are going to happen. Best bet is to have a rebuild shop to the conversion as they have the equipment to measure and adjust small discrepancies.

Thanks again Busa4. I think I'll find a rebuild shop in my area and follow your advice.

Since this is my thread I guess I can get off track. Based on your user name I'm guessing your running a Hayabusa. Is that correct?

No problem. I had an 01 busa but it was stolen before I could do anything to it. I turbo'd 2 gsxr 1000's, a gsxr 600, chevy s10 and my current project is an 86 vette twin turbo. Unfortunately this is addictive. .. :)

LOL! Addictive is right. Mine went from bikes to cars/drag racing back to bikes to my current addiction, which, is Diesels. Now I'm thinking about Solo II (autocross) as something "cheap" to do.

Thanks for your help,
