(#1) http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...45566b2638.jpg block has been cleaned.. waiting on a set of rods & pistons. http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...47090a19f9.jpg tranny bath awaits http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...4735d327a9.jpg the reason this motor was pulled.. rod bolts came loose and caused a ruckus http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...913b99e2a6.jpg |

Good luck with the rebuild! I have parts leftover from my build if you need anything let me know.
Is this the engine you were running or a different one? |

your not washing your clutch disc and pp are you? looks like those are in the "wash tub" with the trans. gl with the rebuild.

first wave of prepping the head.. next step is lapping the valves http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...b9b1cbe057.jpg http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...dd90cd22ac.jpg |
Re: First motor rebuild.. D16Y8.. pics inside
do you guys think I should skip lapping the valves.. the head has about 200k miles on it and will be seeing a low 300hp daily driver

I am guessing you are going the low buck DIY route on this? As in you lap your own valves, and hone your own bore? If so, when you hone the bore hone the ------- ---- out of it. I've been through this with local friends and they are afraid of honing too much, or ASSume they got the glaze off the bore, and the engine just burns oil. If it doesn't smoke right off the bat it does within two oil changes. The only DIY hone I've seen take was where there was a scar in one of the bores and the guy "had to hone it a LOT, but I really wish I didn't have to take that much out of the bore." The engine was smoking within two oil changes, and the three underhoned bores had oil on top of the pistons from crappy ring seal while the "overhoned" one looked perfect. Every engine builder I've talked to agrees that a loose piston-wall clearance doesn't hurt power or reliability, but the engine tends to wear out quicker... since this is a ~300 whp toy on a $5 budget you're not expecting 150K longevity so do it ------- right, sir. :) |

Thanks for the input JD.. always giving good advice. However, the white valves are on the intake side (the head is flipped around). This engine didn't smoke at all when I was running it. d112crazy pointed out that it looked like coolant was leaking into that cylinder, which makes sense because the engine did run like a piece and clunked per rotation (not the same issue), hence I bought it uber cheap to swap.
I will most likely replace the valves in that cylinder just to be safe. I have a full FJT rebuild kit I got for free. updates will ensue when I get home |

valves, springs and retainers removed..
http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...42e25e5231.jpg #4 had some serious issues.. this is by far the thickest oil i've ever seen. it redefines the term "sludge".. no lie http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...500cbf1dd1.jpg |

came up with this setup.. makes lapping a breeze.. I just press on the face of the valve

Re: First motor rebuild.. D16Y8.. pics inside
I was under the impression these were standard bore pistons when I bought them :7
http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...0007028c53.jpg oh well, at least I didn't start honing the stock bore before they got here |
Re: First motor rebuild.. D16Y8.. pics inside
lol better than having a bored block and getting standard pistons.. over bore's never hurt and it cost like 80 bucks yo

Re: First motor rebuild.. D16Y8.. pics inside
a tap bit and a rubber grommet I found laying around.. it held the end of the valve really tight.. so I just spun it from the back side and applied pressure from the front. :)
