Finished Project_Prelude...Turbo NOW spinning at idle & *With PICS*

Hello guys, I just finished installing my custom kit on my Prelude. Last night i started her up and everything seemed fine, but while waiting for all the oil to burn off the mani and everything, one of my buddies asked me, "Dude, is your turbo suppose to look like that?" I run over to see that the turbo had stop spinning. WTF!!! Is that suppose to happen at idle? When i give her some juice it spins and when it returns to idle it stops. What's wrong? Is my turbo bad? It's a brand new Turbonetics turbo....

No lots dont spin at idle dont worry about it.

Are you guys sure man... ??? I was soo frustrated last night that i was about to say ---- It and send the money to buy an SC34 or 61. Well, i guess if it aint suppose to spin then when i get home from school Im gonna go and take it for a sloooww test drive to see if that'll help. Do you guys think it's also because the turbo's new and needs to be brokin in?

what does your drain looks like?
I encountered the same problem and found that the turbo was not draining properly.
I fix the kink and the turbo started spinning at idle.
just my $0.02

I wouldn't worry about it too much. First off, how big is the turbo you are running - you might not have enough exhaust volume moving past the turbine to have it spin. It happned on my install in a 240 sx. There is a video from another member showing his b-series motor with a big turbo and at idle it doesn't spin. Take a look:

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...?topic=46966.0

Make sure that you have a good oil line fed to the turbo and I use a -3an line to regulate how much oil the turbo is actually getting. Post up your specs for the kit installed. If it is a big turbo it will take some time for it to spool. Also put up some pics - everyone wants to see pics.

Re: Finished Project...but turbo not spinning at idle.

Well, i took the turbo apart again to clean it and saw that there were some minor build ups on the blades. I clean the sucker up good, and now it spins freely...wooo wooo Everything is running smoothly, turbo spinning at idle..My question now is, should i drive it around the block to see if it runs okay and to make sure there isn't any leaks before bringing it in to tune? Right now everything on the car is stock, ecu, injectors, etc...the only new thing is the turbo kit. Would it be safe to drive? I don't want to just have it towed to the shop and find out there that some things are not working right. That'll just waste my time and money. Any suggestions?

P.S. Pics WILL be up tonight when i get home. Yall gotta see my custom manifold and setup overall... :y

Do you have an FMU or something? AFC? Check valves? Anything whatsoever to keep the engine from going haywire when it sees that first pound of boost?

personally, i wouldnt risk it, not a good idea. wait until u have atleast ur injectors and a chipped ecu with a decent basemap b4 doing some on road driving, but its ur car man

Wire your WG open and drive it around and make sure everything is working properly. This way you don't build any boost and can check things out.

I agree, there is nothing worse than showing up to a tuner still trying to chase down little stupid bugs that you should have done before worrying about getting tuned, wire your wastegate open and drive around a bit, but dont boost (ive gotten into boost with my wastegate fully open before)

Re: Finished Project...Turbo NOW spinning at idle.

what do you mean by wiring my wastegate open? Do you mean taking it off? Or do i have to run some sort of vacuum lines to it?

Do what ever you have to do to keep the waste gate from closing. If you have a internal then remove the clip that holds the waste gate actuator arm to the flapper lever.

So in my case, because i'm using an external gate, do i have to take the wg out? Or can i just open it up and remove the spring? which would be better?

Mike from LSD Motorsport (that's where i got most of my stuff from) said that i should chip my ECU with a basemap before i take it for a spin. Can anyone give a price range for that? i've done some research but most maps i found are for civics and integras...no preludes. any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciate it. thanks.

Your drivers side tire is on backwards, its directional and you have it going the wrong way. Just FYI. Other than that, looks good. Thats an interesting manifold youve got there.

you can chip your ecu yourself for like 30 bux, and get a chipburner from ebay for like another 50 maybe less, that would get you rolling, but dont drive it hard on a basemap unti you get it tuned with a wb

You got good eyes there...yeah they are on backwards. the dude that i bought it from had them mount wrong. 3 of them were right except the front left. I'll get it remounted though.

Well, i just took it for a spin and it seems to hold up okay. No bogging whatsoever...no oil dripping...Man did i drive slow. I hope to get it tune soon or atleast a basemap so that i can drive it a little faster and get the the shop.

You're catching on quick. Removing the WG will let it vent and so would removing the spring, but the exhaust might push TOO hard damaging the internals of the WG. Just take it off and let exhaust flow everywhere. :y
