finally turbo'd after over a year.

5 Attachment(s)
ive been working on turbo my 85 corolla gts turbo project for over a year and just yesterday i finally started her up and took her for a spin.
omg its freakin fun hitting boost.
@ 4k rpm's it starts boosting. i usually let off around 5 psi cause im on stock fuel. however it seems like the internal wg will let me go to around 10 psi.
its a 16g off ebay. anyone know what the stock setting on those?
well no leaks so far and i have some seriously homemade stuff on here. as you can see from a couple of the pics. anything from jb weld to aluminum foil to plug holes. these arent permanent of course but i just wanted to take the car out of the garage.
a couple of the charge pipes pop off here and there once boost builds up. i just put them back on and continue.
however one time i noticed that if i grab the charge pipe and push it the whole intake side of the turbo will rotate a little.
this is not good right. i am going to try and tighten the ring that holds the two sides together and see if that changes anything.
otherwise as far as i know its running fine. i wish the boost would hit a little earlier.

What are you using to tune it? BTW we need more pic's!

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

im using the stock ecu so i have to be easy on the gas. @ 5 psi i let off the gas. dont want anything crazy happening.
i retarded the timing. running 8.1:1 pistons. trd .8mm head gasket, ARP head studs. and that little intercooler.
i have 440cc and 450cc injectors but i have no way of controlling them until i install the MSII and tune it.
till then its stock parameters.

i know these are crappy pics. but thats all i have for now. ill take better ones today and post them.

pic of my gauges and the carbon fiber plate that i cut and jb welded in place of
where my ash tray used to be.
the oil pressure gauge isnt working. dont know why. i get lights but the needle doesnt move.
i still have my stock one hooked up as well so it gives me a reading. maybe i have to have one or the other not both.

you really think im taking a huge risk. i figured if i go easy on the boost levels it would be fine.

wrong!!! :3

seems like an awfully nice motor to be flushing down the shitter
I would say you are taking a rather serious risk, your fancy gas pedal style isn't going to save your baby.

Yeah don't boost until you get the MS2 in there and working. You'll run dangerously lean and break the engine quick without something to add extra fuel when in boost.

seconded. Either enjoy boost a couple times or a lot of times. I helped a friend MS one of those cars. Welding the trigger wheel on the crank pulley was a PITA to get right.

toyollAZ86 12-04-2008 08:33 PM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

i dont plan on welding the gear on the crank pulley. im just running the regular distributor.
i think the gear mod is for edis, dli, or something.

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

Well it looks like theres hope for me yet. Im just suprised your turbo fit where you have it. I decided to top mount mine, mainly cause its too big to fit down bellow. That manifold is pretty decent, a lot better then my crap plumbing supply log one. Did you make it yourself?

Hitchhikkr 12-05-2008 10:28 AM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

Get that MS on there ASAP. Dont be a tool. If you waited this long to get it running, you can wait a bit longer for it to be right.

Looks good man. :6

toyollAZ86 12-05-2008 09:54 PM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

well it was running NA forever and then i took it apart and threw all the turbo stuff on there.
so it was actually only down for like 2 weeks straight.

yes i did the manifold myself. thanks.
its my first manifold so i wasnt expecting a whole lot. but its holding up. no EGR hookup at all and its running fine.

ive been reading about how to hook the MS up. i need a wideband o2 sensor and a reader.
anyone selling one.

Ive got one ! looks great haven't logged with it yet but don't anticipate any problems.

cool thanks for the feedback. i think ill try this route. assembled.

nice

how bad is it to run MS turbo'd with a narrowband just for the time being.

depends if your motor is expendable or not

4a blocks aren't that bulletproof bro, get a tune

toyollAZ86 12-16-2008 04:23 PM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

just ordered the 14point7 wideband. it should be here in a week or so.
sounds like its pretty easy to assemble. and tuning should be easier with it.
as soon as i do ill be good. ive been driving still only keeping the boost controller out of boost
completely.

smart decision, i'd hate to see one of those cars get destroyed for some stupid mistake. Keep it up and post more pics

nice nylon oil line.. not very heat resistant imho

Toysrme 12-18-2008 08:15 AM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

oxy-fuel manif FTMFW
nylon oil line, wowz
5psi on a 16g with those pistons with that head gasket - bah you're fine. If you're really worried about it, or spiking alot then ebay a $50 used FMU for the time being.

furfrummugen 12-18-2008 02:05 PM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

nice another ae86 boosted... lookin good
but i taking a different route for fuel management and nylon line

toyollAZ86 12-18-2008 02:39 PM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

my oil pressure has been acting crazy lately too. the nylon line seems to holding up fine. longest drive was 30 minutes on the freeway.
i topped off my engine with 5w20 synthetic mobile one. ever since then the pressure has been a little high. its been snowing too. maybe
the cold has something to do with it.

the MS is going in as soon as the wideband gets here.
looking for a bosch o2 sensor bung to weld in.

heres how my chunky ass DP comes through. barely missing the steering knuckle.
i made it two seperate pieces because of how heavy it is.

after watching that tubing torrent i think im going to remake the downpipe a lot cleaner.
it has like 30 cut and welded spots. and the flanges i built to make it 2 pieces is even worse.
hahah. ill try and get some pics of that from under the car.

toyollAZ86 01-05-2009 12:01 AM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

any idea why my oil pressure is going high and sometimes low.

also i bought one of those cheap oil pressure gauges on here and it lights up but doesnt work as far as a reading.

da9 01-05-2009 12:26 AM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

if it were me id run a thicker conventional oil like 10w30 castrol GTX instead of 5w20 synthetic

toyollAZ86 01-05-2009 01:56 AM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

yeah maybe that would help.

TTC 01-05-2009 04:03 AM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

Your oil pressure shouldnt rise and drop unless your engine speed changes. Something is wrong if it does, It took you a year to all of that? Jesus .... do it again and do it at least half assed.

toyollAZ86 01-05-2009 06:40 PM

Re: finally turbo'd after over a year.

it took so long because the car was my daily driver. so i was taking everything out and working and then putting it all back together to drive.
you dont get a lot done that way.
