Default FI with carb. Toyota 4AF.. can it be done?

Howdy folks, I have a question about F.I. with a carb.
I have an AE95. gutless wonder 4AF. The monkey that owned it before me "rebuilt" it ... The head gasket blew after 3 k miles and I have since figured out why.
I am in the process of putting it back together properly, I am adding some cams that "WEB CAMS" make for the engine.
My question is this, this is a carbed motor and later on down the road I would like to "boost" it a bit to increase performance.
maybe 10-15 pounds.
Can this be done with the carb? has anyone here done it? or am I going to have to convert to a 4AFE and inject the thing to be able to put the pressure on?

I have had some folks tell me the pressure will blow the carb seals and others that said it wont. anyone here have any experience in this line of tinkering??

I am not looking for 2.0 second 0-60 times.. just enough power to make it a fun driver and so that I dont feel like I have to beat the hamsters to get on the highway. ...any input would be appreciated.

It's not really the seals that you should be worried about. It's the float bowl. Either way, to pressurize a carb'd system you'll need a new carb with a solid float (no glass). Also, since there's really no air metering system for a carb to determine how much fuel to puke into the motor, you basically have to jet it to dump enough gas to combust all the air at max boost and then run rich for the rest of the time. It'd be bad on gas, and emmissions if you have to worry about that. It's also probably more expensive than swapping over to fuel injection.

modify the carb to a blow through system. You can do that, or just get a 4AFE intake manifold/wiring harness/ECU, and do a conversion. My 4AFTE writeup is in the turbo projects section.

Snafubmx234, I think you meant draw through. I forgot about that. But it's too much work. Just EFI it for that much trouble.

That'll work.. solves the problem, I have a friend up in north GA that has all of the AFE stuff off another car.. I dont think he has the harness though. I was considering a stand alone FMS also, I have the edelbrock pro-flo on my truck.. "SBC" and I can't say enough about it.. it has been perfect for almost ten years.

Anyone have any suggestions on a fuel management system that I do not have to have a laptop installed in the car to run or tune?

Look under Turbo Projects, not tech projects.

I have a 4afe intake manifold and some other ---- laying around if you need it.

I've seen the wiring harnesses go on ebay for ~30 bucks and an ECU go for even less.

If you're going to mess with wiring and all that ----, just swap in a 20v and go from there

Why not use a megasquirt? You need to use a laptop to tune it, but once its done its done, and you dont need to have the laptop in there all the time

I have looked at the mega squirt unit, at this time I do not have a laptop.. and really do not want to purchase one for my car. I have seen a unit, cant remember the name of it but it has a module with it to adjust all of the parameters, very similar to the edelbrock pro flo unit that I have on my truck. It's called SDS EM-4, now that I looked at it again. does anyone have any experience with this unit?.. also I am looking at a set of cams from WEB CAMS for this motor.. they are .330 252 226 577 L. D@ 50 and D. @50. does anyone here have any idea of the real world increases that I might expect from these?

I think I am going to find a 20 v and put it on a stand and start the work, but in the meantime I would at least like to have the stock engine to run with until I am ready for the swap. just a bit more ponies than stock. As far as the cams I really do not want to drop 500 bucks on them if I am not going to see any "real" increase in performance from the 4AF.. any suggestions?
