External wastegate vs internal
 
ok...i have a td04 mitsu turbo. when i weld it on to a turbo manifold i am going to buy, can i buy an external wastegate or do i need to keep my internal wastegate. i dont really understand the difference between the two...i do but i dont - can someone please explain for me??? thanks :o

its all up to you. I'd keep the internal wategate to keep things simple. External is not necessary for under 15psi

so all i would have to do is block off where the external wastegate is? how do you know how much psi is being let out by an internal wastegate? do you just put it to the lowest and read your boost gauge and then fine tune it from there?

Start off setting it fairly low if you dont know its initial setting and then tune it to its "comfort zone". Then pickup a manual boost controller (cheap but gets the job done) or a nice electronic boost controller. It makes turning up/down the boost so much easier than having to fart with your wastegate each time you want to up the boost etc. Just keep in mind with a boost controller you cannot go lower than its lowest boost setting you can only raise it.
