Can someone edit that damned pic its massive.

Im curious as to why some engines come with long tube equal length runners on the intake side. What is the benefit of this sort of thing, from what I understand its supposed to increase torque. You don't see them on economy cars or even mild sports cars like 350z's and supras n ----. I want to build one for my car for shits with a mustang TB on it. What is everyones view about this?

Long intake runners = faggot N/A power. Next to worthless on a properly set-up turbo car.

Unless you have a physical restriction in your manifold, or have uneven air distribution between cylinders, you will see very little gains from long tube intake runners.

Resonance.

The whole design of intake manifolds is all about resonance, among other things. What happens is when the intake change, flowing down a runner, hits the closing intake valve. This creates a pressure wave back up the runner, and when designed correctly and at the right rpm/load it can enter a different runner at the same time the intake valves are open it can flow into the cylinder. This is how N/a engines achieve greater than 100% VE at certain spots.

Its not easy to design. but there are programs out there.

It depends on more than just runner length, also volume etc...

^^^this guy is correct in his theory, but like I said, faggot N/A power. Means nothing on a turbo car. Now if you want to build an expansion intake manifold to cool the boosted air before it hits the valves, thats another story.

they use manifolds like that on protege's & corolla's

basically a reverse header, all about resonance tuning, of course yeah, it really doesn't make much of a difference under boost

It can make somewhat of a difference if you're building a monster, but that doesn't usually happen.

The new Ecotec IMs on the Pontiac Solstice GTX have almost near equal length runners, and they're very short and wide. Nice design for what space is available in their bay.
