Electric Conduit metal?
 

I was thinking... after seeing all of these custom manifolds popping up. The only think that is stopping me from making my own is actually buying a head flange and getting the L's and T's for a log/crazy shaped manifold.

So I was thinking... what kind of metal is electric hard conduit made of? I believe maybe there is a galvanized coating on it. But aside from that I remember last time looking @ it, it seemed plenty thick enough. Any thoughts on this as possible manifold material?

you can't weld galvanized. and i don't think its thick enough anyway. besides, metal electric conduit comes in all these weird fucked up diamters,

when it says 2inch, that 2inch inside diameter. try finding a hose clamp for that

Sure you can, You can either A: just weld it or B: remove the galvanizing coating and weld.

I was in the process of making a downpipe when I did an insulation job at a local warehouse and I found some 2in conduit I figured I would use for a dumptube, After asking a couple guys I work with they told me It wouldnt hold up to the heat. The seam on it looked to be the weakest part. I say go with something others have used and proved to work.

I know you can weld galvanized... just a matter of not inhaleing the fumes. Fluxcore is said to work great on galvanized because you can just sit a box fan to blow away any fumes and not worry about sheilding gases.


Good point about the seams. I suppose that could break eventually due to heat cycling. I think this needs to be tested. I'll mess around with some tomorrow maybe.

Yes, and no. Or maybe just no. :-[ Some people are deathly allergic to galvanized, be very very careful.

What's better than electric conduit is the fence post sold at Homeboy Depot or Blowes... it, also, is galvanized but is a higher quality mild steel. It's ~16 gauge, a bit thin for sand bending, but if properly braced like any tubular manifold will be fine. $8.27 for an 8' length, shucka!!! (my last 6' length of 304L 13 gauge cost $63 plus ax, considering wha ceramic coaings cos when ou're in he know... ;) ) I post this ASSuming that you intend to purchase straight pipe and sand bend to suit. Using thinner than 14 gauge requires infinite finesse or else "rippling" takes place in the pipe - not a big issue for HMT fans, but if you have a bit of bling in your blood pls avoid the thin stuff. Trying to use the existing substandard wide radius prebent conduit is silly - don't bother - just use the threaded pipe fittings found alongside the black iron pipe if you are that ghetto. ;)

welding galvanized is totally doable. the only thing is that it gives off toxic fumes when heated to welding temperature. use lots of ventalation or someone will find you lying down on your torch. good luck man

I think I might have to get some paper towel rolls and start mocking up a whitey bent ramhorn/medusa/i'm high on crack and got a welder kinda manifold. :-*
