EBC Problems

Hi guys. For my final project in my masters degree i'm building an EBC for my car which has an externally gated t3 (.42 .48) that gives 0.6 bar of boost around 4000 onwards on my d14 engine. The project intends to read MAP RPM VSS to provide gear dependant boost control. Up to the boost control part i have no problems. I'm using a 3way pwm capable solenoid off a volvo 1.6diesel which is going to be used as a bleed valve. I'm controlling with pwm and duty cycle control and it seems to work fine. The problem is when i hook up the solenoid in the vacuum line from my turbo to the external wastegate and keep it in off position(not providing any voltage signal) which would let all air pass to the wastegate and not bleed any, my boost tries to go over 1 bar. I'm thinkng the flow of the solenoid (too much of a restriction) isn't enough to provide the air needed in the diaphram of the wastegate. What would be your guess? Do i need a bigger solenoid or can i use more than one solenoid in parallel to meet the flow requirement?

could this work?

im pretty sure you have the line hooked up to the wrong port on the wastegate

The wastegate isn't opened by a certain air flow, it's designed to open at a set pressure. I don't think your line is the problem, and if you try your idea you will just be bypassing the solenoid and it will just open at what the spring is set at.

i have been using the lower port for over a year now and it was working fine

i know it's not just flow, it's flow and pressure because what your doing with wastegates is filling a diaphram. If you dont have enough amount of boost air it will expand and will loose its pressure in the diaphram and wont be able to beat the springs force.

The problem may also be my tiny dump tube putting out too much restriction or my diaphram could have a small leak requiring more air to be pumped to it

I sort of understand why the idea in the picture above wont work. Maybe I should try using the top port with the solenoid while the lower port is normally connected to the turbo.

Re: EBC Problems

some update:

tried the upper port of the wastegate and i'm having similar result. When the solenoid valve is in position to connect the upper port to the atmosphere the boost still climbs up high. I'm guessing it cant vent out enough air trough the port of the solenoid. Tried to use a bleed type mbc between the solenoid and the upper port to help vent out more air still samething... At last i disconnected everything to the upper port and plumbed in just the mbc and took the screw all the way out (no screw on it anymore the hole is completely open) and its not connected to any boost source and still got same result. I think i need some other way of bleeding air out of the upper port without causing any restriction. I'll try to make some holes on the line just to see if it will work cant think of another idea atm..
