Default DSM 14B Turbo

My friend just put a new turbo on his DSM and said he would sell me his old turbo and intercooler for cheap. I would like to run low 13s. I have the JDM B16A SiR II motor in 1992 Civic HB. On other posts I was told it is best to get a t3/t4. However, I have a chance to get a turbo for cheap and if it is possible to run 13s with this turbo I don't want to pass it up. On the other post I was told I need something that is better at higher rpms, but my friend was tellin me that this turbo is good because it is small and will have no turbo lag and the turbo will spool up before the vtec kicks in. So should I buy this or is he just tryin to get some money outta me?

the DSM turbo is too small...

IMO 14b's and T25's are highly underrated in Honda circles. Yeah, we honda people seem to have this idea that our motors "flow" sooo much better than everything else, particularly DSM's. Well, it just ain't true. Fact is DSM heads have great flow. And if a 14b can move enough air to get a 3000lb DSM through the quarter in 12.xx seconds, it can certainly do the same for a 2400 lb honda.

Who said anything about a 14b or T25 being highly underrated or that honda motors flow better than dsm? Both of those turbos work well with d-series projects.

His B16 makes peak power at 7600 rpms and redlines at 8200 rpms. A 1g eclipse engine (14b turbo) makes peak power at 6000 rpms and relines at 7000 rpms. I just pulled these numbers off the internet so if they are off somebody correct me. I am guessing a 14b will be too small since the B16 revs so much higher and you would probably be better off with a different turbo. I also say buy and sell if you can get a good deal.

Many, many people. C'mon, everybody knows the FI honda crowd has a major "big turbo" fetish... This forum may be the lone spot on the internet that doesn't seem to.

To use a really bad calculation, but to make a point..., the 2.0L DSM motor at 7000 rpm's "moves" 14,000L of air per minute. A 1.6L motor at 8200 rpm's "moves" 13,120L. It is true that the 14b runs out of breath before the 7000 rpm redline on DSM motors, but that's not really a big deal unless you're interested in monstor whp, 9:1 compression, and built blocks. IMO, a 14b can generate all the power a stock b16a can reliably put down (300'ish whp well tuned).
