Downpipe Trivia for tuners.....
 

What hypotheticly is the shortest length of pipe, with or without bends that you could call a downpipe be and still plug in a wideband and get an accurate reading?


I ask because I had an 8 inch long 3 inch wide bend coming off a t3 and it sounded good, but no bung for o2, that i hooked up testing some ----.

put on full 3 inch stainless downpipe, which sounded like ass, followed by hooking up the rest of the exhaust which makes the car sound like it got neutered hardcore. Honestly I'm fine with the almost quieter than stock but strong sound, but was curious as to if I wanted to run a really short pipe and put a 02 bung in it for the wideband, would it be accurate and are there any adverse effects anyone could point out to this.....(other than exhaust dumping right under engine)

It's fine, I had about a 12" maybe slightly longer pipe to begin with and the O2 bung was in the middle of it.

the wideband will have a suggested minimum length. this is so you don't overheat and burnup the sensor. you can add a copper heatsink to help aswell, but i wouldn't shorten it past the minimum (which generally speaking is about 12")

read your sensor's book for that minimum rating. then you need to find out how much length you need after that to inhibit fresh air from contaminating your reading. i don't know that distance off hand.

my innovate wideband was 24" or something, i had to put it under the oil pan by the intermediate shaft.
