downpipe question

I did a search but didn't find what I was looking for.

Somewhat soon I will need to make a downpipe for my turbo setup. The tubo is off of a mid 80's chrysler car its called an M10 by airreasearch.

Anyways I need to make a downpipe. Where would I find a flange so I can weld the exhaust tubing to it? I've considered the junkyard but I wondered if autozone/murrays would be able to order that short pipe or the flange....i doubt that.

Anyways any help would be appreciated...I wish there was something in the tech projects about downpipes that would a nice addition for some people :)

M10 by Airesearch huh??? sounds like a t3. Is it the 5 bolt flange? I got my flange on ebay. You could try a junkyard, but good luck finding the right one and getting it off. Cheapturbo.com has a pretty nuce selection of flanges also. :)

Re:downpipe question

It is infact a T3 turbo with some strange flanges... anyways no its not a 5 bolt its only 2!

here is a pic of the exhaust side...looks very simple but I'm not sure where to get one. I didnt see one on cheapturbo. Seems more like a donut goes in there with a small flange...

OK, you have a whole different can of worms on you hands there. The only cars I have bean able to successfully use these on have been Chryslers and VWs, ones with the exhaust manifold on the back of the block. The flanges are turned in a way that if you try to use it on the front of the motor the outlet always points in the wrong direction. If you are making your own manifold you could get away with some strange outlet location to turn the turbo in the right direction but if you are going to use a aftermarket manifold or an HF with an adapter plate it won't work. And to make matters worse the bolt paterns on the exhaust housing are all freaks, the inlet to the turbo is Chrysler only and won't fit anything else, there is enough metal there to redrill it to standard Garrett T3 flage though. The wastegate housing bolts to the exhaust housing with five bolts like other Garrtett turbos but the bolt patern is off and you can't replace it with one off of a Ford or Volvo, and you can't use the block off plate from cheap turbos to run an external wastegate.

I just realized who you are airtonics, you have a quad four (echotech) don't you? With the manifold on the back of the block, you should be OK with this turbo. You are sending me the intercooler for the mounting brackets soon right? I will throw one of those Chrysler downpipes in the box when I send it back. I have lots of junk like that lying around.

Re:downpipe question

Thank you custom coach that was some good info. The manifold wont be a problem because I'm having it made specifically for that flange unless he welds it wrong! On my setup this turbo seems like it will work perfectly. I'll be keeping the internal wastegate so an external one wont be necessary.

My exhaust manifold is towards the firewall on my car on the opposite side of your honda's. Its a pontiac sunfire 2.4 so even the outlet seems to point where i need it....straight down.

So long as that exhaust outlet is suppose to point down....(i coudlnt understand why it wouldnt) then I should be all set on how everything mounts up at least I hope ::)

Any idea where I could get a flange for that exhaust though?

yoll need an exaust gasket for the outlet, go to the manif that you puled the turbo off of and get them to order a gasket ad then take the gasket to a muffler shop and have them make the adapter from the gasket.

Re:downpipe question

They have the exhaust gasket for that turbo here http://www.relentlessracing.com

This place also has the Chrysler T3 turbine inlet flange and inlet adapter to help people get that odd ball turbo to work on whatever.

Click on Turbo Accessories and scroll down to Exhaust outlet doughnut seal 2.5"
You may want to email them about a flange also. They specialize in those turbos.
