does it matter where you put your bov?
I have a 2G DSm bov and it looks really crappy because I had to plastic jb weld a vacum nozzle back on, and it just looks like but, anyways, can i mount it before the intercooler, or does it have to be after? And if after, anywhere I want to put it after?
thanks |
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
Yeah you can mount it anywhere. maybe you can mount it on a lower charge pipe so it's outta view, but you gotta remember son... This is HMT. Ghettostyle! no one here cares what it looks like ;)

Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
the further away from the TB you mount it, the shittier your throttle response is gonna be.
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
according to corky bell's "maximum boost", the closer it is to the Throttle body, as stargazer said, the better your throttle response is, but it's also harder on your turbo due to the response of the BOV.
Cliff notes: Mount that bitch right in the middle! or right on the intercooler ;) |
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
maybe I'll just paint it to match the color of my car to spiff it up and put it where everyone puts it. No one looks at my engine anyways.
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
about a foot or a foot and a half away from the TB should be fine for both throttle response and turbo life.
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
If you have a blow-thru setup(venting atmosphere) anywhere before the MAF(mass air flow sensor)

Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
so there isnt uniform pressure in the charge pipes huh?
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
no... it's like a domino effect... the throttle closes... then the pressure (or dominoes) starts going back towards the turbo
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
So wouldn't you think if you stopped the first domino from falling it wouldn't cause any harm to the other dominos?
Translation: So wouldn't you think if you purged the air at the beginning of the closure it wouldn't allow pressure to reach the turbo? __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
intresting topic...
im gunna have to agree with dr. boost on his last comment.... |
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
Im ganna mount mine by the throttle boady and vent a 1" pipe out the side of my fender so it blows up chicks skirts as im driving by 8)

Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
thats y a lot of people put a filter on their bov when venting to the atmosphere
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
what do you make a filter out of?

Translation: So wouldn't you think if you purged the air at the beginning of the closure it wouldn't allow pressure to reach the turbo? bov placed near throttle = better throttle response bov placed near compressor = better pressure release/less backspool so with the bov next to the throttle, you are SOFTNING the dominos at the expense of slight backspool... with the bov close to compressor you are STOPPING the dominos at the expense of throttle response... that's why mitsus (at least older ones) have the bov closer to the compressor than the throttle.

Honestly, I don't think you would ever have a problem with the BOV mounted near the throttle body. Most factory turbo cars don't even use BOV's so having one mounted close to the throttle body that might not stop 100% of the charge from backfiring to the turbo is good enough IMO. If you were running 20+ psi it would be more crucial, but not at anything less.

Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
yea... but most of those cars have devices similar to dashpots on older civics that don't let the throttle slam shut at once... it eases closed, so that the turbo has a chance to spool down. I personally could care less... I don't own most of my cars for more than a year anyway
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
OK, OK... I got an idea that fixes both problems.
Put 2 BOV's :) One near throttle body, and one near turbo (on IC for example). There... problem solved ;D |
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
I guess the BOV next to the FMI is 100% show off...
if you consider it a dayly driver maybe its safe for the bov to be in the engine bay and not exposed to all the street dust. |
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
damn you guys are beating this to death! If it's a street car at 8 psi who the ---- cares where the BOV goes? You're BOV isn't gonna suck up a damn pebble..that's probably less likely than water injection with a CAI. But yeah..I'd be weary to put it in the front bumper like that.
That greddy type S mounted on the end tank looks pretty badass but I'll be mounting my BOV on the upper charge pipe like everyone else. Just my 02 cents |
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
who said we were running 8psi... I'm building 2 street crx's (one sohcvtec, one lsvtec) that will both be running about a bar daily-driven...
|
Re:does it matter where you put your bov?
I'm mounting mine 1-1.5 feet from the tb.
