does this look like there'd be boost leak?

thanx for the help. i was just wonderin if this would cause some boost leak? if yes how would i solve this problem, a gasket?

and one more question. if this problem wont be solved by a gasket, are gaskets REALLY necessary i've heard arguments on both sides.

thanx

Re: does this look like there'd be boost leak?

there won't be a boost leak

just an exhaust leak

Re: does this look like there'd be boost leak?

oh yeah! but should i put a gasket for a T3 inbetween there? or what to do to solve it. cuz i cant afford loosin air right before the turbo, i need all the air flow i can get to spool that baby up!!

id use a gasket, but as long as both surfaces are flat you should be just fine.

They aren't. I had the same problem. I went to the fab shop and had it milled/shaved down until it was all one level surface. Problem solved. Did that turbo come from a Volvo 740?

Re: does this look like there'd be boost leak?

^ hey thanx for the replies, i have no idea what car it came off of. i have been tryin to figure that out for days. its a T3, TB03, .52a/r .48 turbine. but i just put this stuff called "permanex" its a silicone gasket. i put it all over the turbo flange, and smeared it with my finger, bolted the turbo on the mani. then put some silicone gasket around the edges to keep it from leaking. should hold up great! but if you guys know what car this turbo came off of it'd be great, just for future parts (hopefully i wont need any anyways).

thanx

here's a pic with it on, you can see the silicone stuff on the turbo where its bolted up to the mani:

by the way, shot out to csaddict for the mani. looks great, ill let you know how it runs soon hopefully.

Guess you'll find out when you run it

nah, i just read it and it said it should have no problems with high temerature.

I don't hold much confidence in it. That's just me. All -------rigged. Get the flange shaved down flat. Unless of course I'm wrong and it holds and I was dumb for me getting it shaved down for $40.

Could you have those spots welded and ground flush?

its not that its not flat, both surfaces were perfefly flat, but the flange in the mani was completely square, and the flange on the t3 kinda rounded on the edges, so it stuck out a little on the side (but still completely flat) so i just had to put something to fill that little gap, so that i wouldnt have an exhaust leak.

Dude get real these guys are yanking your chain.
That gasket stuff is a joke no way its going to hold.
Go to a hardware store. Buy a sheet off copper thats 2mm thick and fabi your own gasket.
High Temp LOL ::)

Re: does this look like there'd be boost leak?

read the back of the permatex tube

it says it doesnt like gasoline, personally i think u could of been good without it

my flanges had flux all over them from welding on them and they dont leak one single bit
the trick is to tighten the ---- outta your new bolts before you run them

^ coo thanx.

Re: does this look like there'd be boost leak?

the flanges are different...its not a matter of tightening the bolts down more

Re: does this look like there'd be boost leak?

I would just start the thing up and then go from there. Don't ask questions like this. If it is something that isn't gonna break anything, then wait til you konw it is a problem, then ask.

The oil line question was stupid, but worth asking kinda. The turbo takes a ---- if you didn't fix that thing. If you don't fix this, then your car just makes a small sputtering noise.

good ole jb weld ... go get some black steel if that doesnt work .. i guess its like a puddy or something for exhaust leaks hold like 600 degress? i think not sure

96_civ 07-15-2005 12:35 PM

Re: does this look like there'd be boost leak?

^hmmm, cool ill try that before welding it, if the permanex stuff doesnt hold

that thing is gonna melt. i tried it, it didnt work. what the back of the tube means by heat isnt anywhere close to the temps this thing will see. get it shaved down.
