Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

My car overheats when I sit and let it idle for very long. When I'm driving it it stays perfectly where it should. How can I fix this, I've taken off one radiator fan for the turbo, but it's got coolant and the other fan works. I don't feel like dishing out $300 for a racing radiator either.

does your fan actually work? Are there any air pockets in the coolant system?

You say uve taken off one fan? i take it u mean the ac fan... driver side fan... Idling is when the car overheats or needs a fan.. If you know how a radiator works, its really only cooling ur coolant when ur driving, get ur fan working right or get a better fan, and if u really need my help ill get u this awesome racing coolant, its like 20$ but it works awesome for keeping temps down.

Fans cost $40 at any Auto Zone or places like that, rig up a bunch of slim fans and cool that thing off.

Just like everyone else is saying....check your fan.
Start you your car and let it heat up to see if the engine fan comes on automatically and make sure it's blowing towards your engine not away from it. If it doesn't than there's your problem. Which radiator do you have?
The full size or the half skinny radiator? The half skinny radiator isn't the best for a turbo car.

you guys make it so complicated, I see the simpl soltution right here, DON'T LET YOUR CAR SIT AND IDLE FOREVER, DUH!! :P ::)

lol, thats what i've been doing. I cut my car off when in drive thrus. I'll look into the fan thing. Actually now that you mention it I haven't seen that fan on in a while. I check and see if its working. Thanks guys.

mine's wired to be on at all times =) but yea...i had that problem going thru drive thrus and in the staging lanes before...

I have the same problem, I dont have a rad fan at all though. Try a pusher fan setup. They're slim, cheap, and flow better then stock. I dont have one yet cause Im a cheap ass. ;D It was either a FMIC or fan... I went w/ the Intercooler. Till you fix your fan or get a pusher set-up, try some water wetter. Its cheep and works. Drops temps 20* or 20%, one of em. :-\ NE wayz... WATER WETTER :P

jump it off the battery to see if it works

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

most fans usually runs straigh off 12v, so just get a nice switch, some wire, and hook it right off the battery(use a fuse) and then to the switch, so you can turn it on when ever you want. cheapest and easiest

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

Try this bro....putt around in your car until it's warm then pull into a parking lot and let it idle. When the temps start to rise turn your heat on full blast and see if that makes the temps drop. If so, then replace your thermostat. ;)

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

yeah, thats what i have been doing to keep it from over-heating.. if i turn the heat on it will go back to normal operating temperature.. also i squeezed the rad. hose and there really wasnt any pressure, it was hot though. but still how come the fan never ever comes on?

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

check the fuse for the fan first. if it doesnt work... like spenser said.... wire in a switch which is pretty easy. im actually wiring my own switch 2 morrow.

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

---- my car just started doin this ---- a couple days ago >:( my fan dosent turn on ither, come to think of it i dont thyink it ever turned on :-\ but it never overheated. when i did my swap i changed the thermostat, so im sure thats good. and when i put the heat on its ok. well i guess im gonna just rig a switch up to the fan. im sure that will do it.

90zcrex sounds like we both have the same problem. when you get it fix let me no what it was. ill do the same

o-yea i question: will (the ac fan plug) plug into the radiator fan? i also dont have my ac fan but i still have the wire and plug for it. ---- if that works ill just turn the ac on so the fan will just run :)

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

I will tell you how I fixed my fan problems. When I did my CRX DX to Z6 swap I never put the coolent temp switch back on the Z6 block like I was suppose to. You would remember if you did this. The Z6 block has a plug in the back that you have to take out and put in the coolent temp switch from your DX engine. This is what turns on your fan. Well lucky for me on the Z6 block right off the thermostat there is a coolent temp switch but you have to have the plug that goes on there to make it work. Well there is a plug that isn't used that fits this plug so I cut the wires off of it and put in on the old DX wires for the coolent temp switch. Works just fine now. If you did do this I don't have a clue as to what is wrong with your fans. Just hard wire it up so that it turns on when you car is turned on. I did that for my friends crx. Works great. Never has to flip a switch or worry about it.

Yeah I just wired mine up so that it comes on with acc. Went through a few drive thrus and it hasn't overheated, thanks for the help guys.

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

for anyone that doesn't want to rig up a switch, there's 3 things that can keep your fan from running: a dead fan, a dead fan relay (if you've got A/C or it was an option), or a dead temperature switch. the fan's easy to check and a relays cheaper than a new temp switch, so check everything in that order.

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

I went to the junk yard nd grabbed a non-turbo Ford Probe fan. they had a 2, a push and a pull. I to the push style, trimmed it a little and use some zip ties like you get with a fal fan. I have it on a switch and it works great, Its about 11 inch round and about 1 1/2 - 2 inch thick,

Re:Does anyone elses car overheat while idling?

try purging the air out of the cooling system. There is a bleeder valve, somewhere like on the water neck, open it till water squirts out while the car i srunning.
