do i need extenal wastegate for ihi turbo?

i wanna run my car at list 8psi with my d16z6. my question is do i need to have a external wastegate to run 8psi?

what i have: dsm 450cc injectors, resistorbox to make pick & hold, ihi turbo from mx6, stock vob from mx6, fuel pressure.
what i need: p28 ecu, fuel pump, manual boost controller....

i need a right list what i need to run 8psi..please give me list what else i need...thank you. :'(

Does the turbo have an internal wastegate? Not sure what the stock boost setting is on those. You could either get a different actuator if you needed to lower boost or get a manual boost controller to raise it. Might help you out if you don't want to get an external gate.

www.------------- for your P28.

Just use the wastegate on your turbo now. It will save you money until you want to upgrade.

Incorrect. The wastegates for RHB5's are set to 8.7 psi.

I havde an IHI RHB5 from an 88 Thunderbird and it's gated at 9 psi, though 11 psi spikes are common. I don't know if it shares a waste gate actuator with its little brother from the Probe/MX6, though. Maybe. 7 psi sounds reasonable too.

thanks to homemadeturbo and peeps for help!!!

shibikku95 : I would rather recommend a T3 rather than a IHI RHB5.

spekter: Did you port the wastegate hole? You can enlarge it quite a bit with a carbid burr and it will reduce your spikes but first, double check that you don't have too much preload on your actuator arm. It has to just barely hold the flapper shut. if it'S installed tighter than that, the flapper won't open as much as it's supposed to and that's the main cause of boost spike. Some people even believe that you can adjust boost by adjusting the lenght of the rod. :S

Re: do i need extenal wastegate for ihi turbo?

Thanks blaast, but I really don't plan on living with this thing forever. The spikes aren't too bad, so I am just going to deal with them. Like you mentioned, the wastegate is not the best on these things, but it can be improved. I am just too lazy. :)

Re: do i need extenal wastegate for ihi turbo?

im gonna try the ihi first cuz its new.

for resistor box question. i have a resistor box came from junk yard and i want my car to be pick & hold. the one on this web, its just shows cutting the wires from injectors and putting the resistors from radioshack, and i dont wanna do that way i wanna do using the original resistor BOX without rewiring the wires from injectors. is there anyway that you could customize to saturated+pick & hold? like if you wanna change back to saturated you just unplug the resistor box and just put the socket back to where it was...something like that....cant explain...but yea...any?

....how do i check the resistor box if its working or not? danm..didnt think about that...

Re: do i need extenal wastegate for ihi turbo?

you can mount the resistor box using the stock honda connectors that were hooked up to it, which makes testing and replacing it very easy.

to install the resistor box, you simply cut one wire per injector. The one that is the same colour across all 4 injectors. you don't touch the ones with one different colour per injector.

you solder together the 4 extremities of the freshly cut wires that come out from the harness with the only wire of the resistor box that is of it's own colour. YEah, That's gonna make an ugly 5 wires connection.

then, you simply run the four same coloured wires of the resistor box to the cut extremities of wires coming out from the injectors. Order is not important. You're done.
