DIY internal wastegate psi tester!!! (cost less than $5)

so i've been doing research for the last 2 weeks trying to figure out what psi my internal wastegate fully opens. the results ranged from 7psi to 25psi.. and i just couldnt trust that kind of range.. so i decided to rig up a ghetto diy psi tester. works well for anyone who's unsure aobut the psi setting of their internal wastegate, or anyone who's trying to adjust it and wants to check real fast.

and since a few people have been asking about what psi the td05h big 16g actuator opens... its 9psi.

items used
1. wastegate actuator (duhh)
2. vacuum hose.
3. portable tire pressure checker meter thing ($1.00 at autozone)
4. electrical tape
5. vice. (or you can use your feet to pull back the actuator)

electrical tape 1 end of vacuum hose to the tire pressure checker. make sure no air can escape out of it or else the readings will be off.

next, mount actuator mounting point to the vice.

pull the actuator back as if it was fully open

WHILE STILL PULLING THE ACTUATOR BACK ALL THE WAY: put other end of the vacuum line into the fitting on actuator

then release actuator and see the results! (try several times just to make sure)

hope this helps anybody out who is going crazy about trying to find out what psi their wastegate actuator is set at!

Why not just leave the actuator on the turbo and watch when the flapper opens?

i'm still waiting on my oil and coolant lines to come in the mail, so i figured i might as well do this.
the diy pressure reader said 9psi exact... and i got a few pms and emails from other people who have the same turbo and they said 9psi. (reason why evo's boost higher is because they have a boost controller and thats why other sites said 20-25psi.

No I mean leave the actuator on the turbo while the turbo is off the car so you can watch the flapper open. Did you think I was proposing you watch the flapper while the turbo was installed? Unless you have x-ray vision or no downpipe; that would be impossible.

i did a similar thing, except i pressurized the actuator and seen when it opend fully.

stickeyyyyy .. and i was just screwin around with mine lol ..... but i have a quick question .. if the wastegate is about half way open at no pressure does that mean the turbo wont hit boost as quick ? or just wont go past a certain psi ?

Yes, and yes, and there's something wrong with your wastegate actuator
or the adjustment, like binding or defective internal parts.

kona447 07-22-2009 08:28 PM

no theres nothing wrong . i was messing with the setting on the waste gate cuz its threaded .. i just dont want my turbo going past like 5 psi for now . so i opened the waste gate a little bit .. and i turned it bak so its just a little bit open
