Default Dilemma

Hey all

I'm an Australian user.
Just deciding on a turbo setup. I'm getting 50:50 responses from people when i say i wanna boost my stock D16A8 in my CRX. I've already got a

T25
Microtech MT-8
Turbosmart BOV
HPC coated manifold
and all the piping and dump pipe

People mostly tell me i'm a friggin idiot wanting to boost a stock motor and laugh when i say it'll handle 8psi. They all tell me i should lower my compression or my whole bottom end is gonna bust, and that'll i'll need to tip toe my car around coz it's gonna be under serious strain as it is.
My motor currently has 216,000kms on it and is completely stock other than an exedy HD clutch. Can i boost this motor? I'm thinking on a new one anyway with much lower kms.

Can you people give me any advice??
This forum rocks guys, wish there was stuff like this in AUS but here we have only half a dozen or so turbo CRX's in the whole of AUS.

I'm not too worried as we have a very experienced honda guru down here whos solely responsible for his own 11 second turbo.

Regards Alex

I'm not familiar with the D16A8 engine. Is it 1.6 liter DOHC? I know the D16a9 is the European equiv of the ZC; is that the same? With any high mileage engine, imho, the best way to tell if it will be decent to boost is to do a compression test and a leakdown test. That will tell you if your rings are leaking, you head gasket is faulty in any way and if any valves are leaking. If all that comes back within spec, you can boost 7-10 psi with good fuel management with no problem. Goto the engine management forum here and read about TurboEdit and Uberdata depending on whether you're obd0 or 1.

Thanks for that mate.
Yeah the D16A8 is a DOHC 1.6 with a 5 spd that came in all the Aussie Delivered Si's.. here we only really have Si's and SiR's. The best two CRX's in my opinion.
It's pretty damn similar to the ZC but is designed for our fuel and crappy octane levels.
visit
www.crxaustralia.com if you wanna have a look at some of our cars.
I've been looking on your site for info on boosting the D16A8 but it seems most of your cars are SOHC.. boosting all D series can't be too dissimilar.. right?

Welcome to the forums man. Nice to see we are reaching way out down under bring some of your mates on, we are always looking for different viewpoints.

What is the stock compression ratio for that motor? Anyway you can pick yourself up a spare d16 block just in case? Replacing normal things like a headgasket and making sure the pcv system are in check is essential. Research the hell out of everything before you boost. Jeff (our admin) has blown a few motors before he has figured it out, but now he is doing some crazy ----.

It's all about fuel management, there are enough resources out there to get it done. Take the advice on checking out the motor to make sure it's in good shape first. What is the ECU that comes in your car?

i'm pretty sure the compression ratio is 9.5, that sound right? the engine makes 94kw peak and i think the ECU is called a PM7.. but that i'm pretty shady on. Either way my ECU is being hauled out and replaced with the Mircotech.

One more thing, how do all your stock gearboxes hold up on 10psi? i've got mates running over 20psi in their CRX's and they're strengthened to the shithouse.

Microtech? I'm not an absolute honda ecu expert but I would suggest chipping your own. It's the best route to go with, plenty of help out there for you.

I would pick up a spare ECU then get a chip burner setup for $100-200. Check out Turboedit in the engine management section.

My d16a6 SI tranny worked well with high abuse, liked to pop out of first gear when going slow.. otherwise it was all good.

Is that the ECU that came in the 1st gen integras? I heard those are a mother ****** to "chip" consider another OBD0 one to work on, I need to have some OBD0 experts get with u on this.

pm7 is basically a pm6 w/ ZC Maps. he has a ZC motor in there (basically).

I know in europe they have TWO ZZ style motors.

d16a9 and a d16a8. One is MPFI and one is DPFI or carbed or something weird like that.

9.5 compresion is fine with good tuning. Microtech isn't too common around here, but hey, if you can use it well, use it.

Gearboxes hold up to 10 PSI just fine, the clutch probably won't hold that much power though, especially if you beat on it.

Thanks for clarifying that for me Mike.

So he has that SOHC ZC motor?
