Detonation Issues

Hello :D

I'm home for Christmas and I used TurboEdit to tune my rex with the smooth boost transition rom. First I had the ignition set to 1.00 deg per PSI, now it's 0.60 deg per psi and the detonation is exactly the same... Since I'm getting more power at .60, I'll keep it there, but I believe my problem is the spark plugs. I'm using bosch 4's... What sparkplug would y'all recommend for the best price?

NGK 2steps colder

YEAH, him and Kaneda13, i think that guy died or something.

What are you running for gas Pep? I'd try new plugs also and see what that does.

I've been at school in Nashville, TENN

I'm using premium gas.

Yeah, I'm just using bosch 4's with standard replacement wires.

BTW, the power increase from 1.00 to 0.60 was pretty sweet, and I've up'ed the boost a few psi :) whooo

Last we heard was Kaneda13 was gonna have a baby. After that, never saw him again. I even e-mailed him to see how things were going and got no reply. I miss the weekend update. :'(

deff. ngk's not to jack the thread but how can you determine steps hotter and colder, the numbers on the plug?

I know everyone loves ngks, but a mechanic I know hates them. My car was running like ---- with some ngks, we switched plugs and it runs alot better now. I don't remember which ones we got, I think they are the nascar ones.

autolite

ya, exactly the nascar ones, you must be a fan.

Re:Detonation Issues

im not so sure this is a Plug problem. This actually sounds alot like a problem with lack of octane. Do you have carbon buildup or oil leaking into the intake air ? theres alot of things that can cuase knock

1 oil in the charge pipes
2 To much spark advance
3 ack of octane
4 increidably high charge temps
5 high compresion ratio vs amount of boost.
6 crbon buildup or hot spots int eh combustion chambers ( try cleaning the engine with a bit of water from a windex spray bottle. ) it will remove any carbon big enogh to create a hot spots

thats what i think would cuase it. The only thing cold plugs do is create a fouling problem.

no it's cuz i work at advance auto parts, and hate nascar and autolites, there horrible plugs

kyle is a horrible person, he uses the 88 cent a quart oil too.....

i'm using denso one step colder, i'll get the part # when i feel like going out to my car.

Re:Detonation Issues

The autolites have screw-on conductors (top part), apparently to save money. I got a set once, and one of them was missing the conductor. Yeah, that is quality control for you ::)

no I don't, I buy the 5 quarts for $5, I wish I could find some good 88 cent stuff. but the autolites are for serious doing good. Graham, you should try that spraying water in trick, it is the cheapest, and you heard it from me: kyle the cheapass.

actually, the only reason I'm using that cheap ass oil is because I was going to change it the day after I put it in so that I could get out the oil water mix that occured from bad block to head seal, but I never did change my oil. Oh well, the head and block still aren't sealed, coolant gets into my cylinders and goes out the tail pipe and rusts out my muffler and makes it hang so that I get to use a hanger to hold it up, yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111one.

Re:Detonation Issues

I put some different plugs in and it helped for the most part... however, I think I've got some carbon buildup in there... 205 compression in each cylinder. The last time I put water INside the engine I sucked it through a vac hose but it drank too much and almost hydrolocked (turned off and couldn't get it to start). I'm pretty sure my starion FMIC is doing a fine job for 7-9 lbs of boost.

Re:Detonation Issues

Got detonation? Not enough fuel will cause this.
Also, What is your exhaust system like? A restriction could cause detonation. Check your cat.

MR_DR_PEP 12-21-2003 11:52 PM

Re:Detonation Issues

I've got an open race cat with 2" exhaust... will upgrade to 2.5. It should be getting plenty of fuel. I'm using a boost rom with 7% more fuel in the areas that I heard detonation.

stretch-d 12-23-2003 09:12 PM

Re:Detonation Issues

That 2.0" exhaust is most likely the culprit. You're probably getting some reversion of the exhaust gasses back into your combustion chamber. After you upgrade to 2.5", you'll have much better flow and will most likeley need to re-map your air/ fuel mix. What's more... There's a good posibility that you won't need so much timing retard giving you better throtle
response and torque down low. I would do this asap. Even moderate detonation is extremely destructive.

What are you running for a fuel pump and injectors?
Do you have access to a wideband?

Semnos 12-25-2003 08:06 AM

Re:Detonation Issues

I would say MR_DR_PEP use other plugs...those bosch 4 plug things aren't boost friendly and yeah go with a bigger exhaust ;).
Haven't seen ya for a while here man...no internet at college?
