datsun a12

hey guys iv got a t3 turbo and want to turbo my 73 datsub 1200 and i dont really want to run a air cooler because its a cheap rally car and wanta bit more power and i was wonder on weather i could get some pics or someone to explain on how i should do this its completly stock and there is a set up iv seen that pulls 97kw at the wheels so i know it can be done

intercool it man.
it wont necessarily add that much budget to your kit.

ya if you're gonna be rallying it, definitly run an IC. You can get a sidemount for like $40

so can any one explain how i should do this so that i dont stuff it up i can do every thing my self no problems iv just hurd things about timeing over heating with this motor when its turbocharged i have no idea on how to run the set up so any pictures or someone to explain it would be great

Re: datsun a12

just give it 5-8 intercooled psi of boost the usual way. i don't see why it would overheat.
Compression of this engine may be low enough to prevent detonation so all you have to do is give it some extra fuel in the boost some way.

Im not very versed in the subject but I would guess that's because it's a vacuum advance distributor and maybe that fucks with the timing? Maybe putting a check valve inbetween the manifold and dizzy would help? Im sure somebody's got some ideas on that

Re: datsun a12

well its done its running 8psi of boost throught a intercooler iv had no problem with overheating or timing i put in a coper head gasket to lower the comp ratio and just put a bigger radiator in all up it cost me 230 thats with the angle grinder i had to bye to cut the pipes lol

Re: datsun a12

Why raising the head? to prevent detonation? That was good back in the 80's.
It slows down your spool up and makes the car feel mushy when off boost.
i think you could have kept the engine AS IS and simply add a MSD BTM to avoid detonation, allowing you to keep fuill compression and full timing off boost.
But hey, no biggy, you did not spend too much money yet so if it works, call it a day and have fun.

i took the coper head gasket out and it does spool up quicker and i heat raped all my pipes and is running beautifully iv had no problems so far i just hope it dosnt ping

Re: datsun a12

hope doesn't really help avoiding detonation.
unless youa re SURE it is not detonating and you don'T plan to up the boost any more that that, Just get a MSD BTM and have the timing retarded under boost.

There is always a risk that you set the btm to remove more timing than necessary, affecting power with too large security margins. To avoid that, get the J&S safeguard that is retarding the timing both at a set amount of degrees per psi but also as a real time reaction to knock sensor readings, and on each cylinder individually. This system rocks. IMO. it keeps you safe, monitoring detonation and applying just the bare minimal amount of retard for max power and safety.
