damn ching chong turbo???

so i was just wondering why i can grab my charge pipe (ebay 16g)
and with one finger push it and the whole compressor housing will
spin independent from the exhaust housing. i tried to post a video
of it on youtube and photobucket but neither would work. it sure made
rotating for better charge pipe location easy, however, i also found
oil in the piping.

besides throw it away and buy a new turbo,
what are my options to fix either or both problems.

does it spin independantly of the turbine side or of the center cartridge. MHI turbo's of that flavor have the goofy v-band on the exhaust side, that could be fubar, or the fasteners that hold the compressore to the center cartridge might just be loose. Post pic of the pos, but it really can only be one of those 2 things

Judging by the OP's description of the problem I'd have to think it is the latter of the two problable causes posted by fastspec2. If you've ever clocked a turbo compressor side you'd know how to fix it. The compressor side of the turbo just needs to be tightened up, could be a v-band or just 4-5 bolts on the compressor that sort of "sandwich" it onto the center section. Just look for some loose bolts.

it has like a huge snap ring clip thingy. the ones you (supposedly) need special needle nose pliers for.
im pretty sure thats all that holding it in there.

does the compressor housing spin and everything else stay tight?

it must be missing the locating pin. there is supposed to be a pin that is pressed into the compressor housing and it fits into a hole in the center housing to keep it from moving.

thats why i offer 1 year warranties

fastspec2 03-16-2009 12:04 AM

the chicoms I've seen of the 16g don't have the pin. Make sure the ring is all the way in the groove and seeted properly

Yeah that snap ring looks like it's sticking out a bit too far and isn't tucked under the compressor cover far enough. Just compress is and then make sure it goes all the way back. You're not going to find that the backplate will spin like the other guy said because as you can see it's cast as part of the bearing housing. That's probably the only good thing about Mitsubishi turbos.

the only part that spins is the polished part of the compressor housing.
i will try and push it further in. ive never had that part out. so if its not seated,
it had to have come that way.
