Dag, I'm knocking...

Well, I've been hearing some knocking (detonation) at around 6 psi... and that's strange considering I'm retarding my timing 1.0 degree per PSI, and It's getting it's fuel needs running the 450cc injectors with the 91pm6george binary file I'm using on the ROM chip. Btw, I have an air/fuel gauge, and it goes rich on full throttle.

I've only recently heard the knocking (it's been hot), and I think it's that small intercooler I'm using... so what to do now? Well, I'll tell ya... water injection baby.. woot.. anyway, since I'm only going to be using about a max of 8 psi, and I've got an intercooler, what would be the best bet to do with the water injection pump / nozzle? I want to spray a nice mist in my chargepipes, but I don't want too much because I'm already using an intercooler and I thought that maybe the water wouldn't evaporate properly before it went into the combustion chambers.. but let me know.. k, thanks.. yeah

how big is the intercooler you're using? i'm gonna install a modified 2g eclipse ic front mounted configuration.

a good spray bar for your pipes or IC is one of those spraying systems that you see inthe produce area in a grocery store. Go to like home depot or something like that and look around.

But I guess u could just get a garden hose and drill holes in it ;)

or.. You can do an air-water intercooler.?

You'll need... a pump, a quick connector for a nozzle, a nozzle, hoses, a solenoid, a boost pressure switch, a fuel main relay, a reservoir, and some misc. wires and connectors.

I'd recommend for your application using a .4mm-.5mm size jet nozzle with a 100 psi pump. Set it to start injecting at 6 psi since that is when you are starting to knock.
Put your water injection nozzle about 3-4" up from the intercooler.

Don't worry about hydrolocking, as long as your pushing boost when the water starts to inject the water evaporates instantly. But since you're already intercooled I would just enable it when you get to where your engine is knocking (6 psi). This should also let you advance your timing at the lower end. :)

Hope that helps.

Re:Dag, I'm knocking...

CRX88si, I think you're talking about an intercooler spray, correct? Yeah, that works too, but water injection is spraying water inside of the chargepipes... pretty cool stuff.

Thanks for the info... I'll probably have it switch on at above 6 psi, and I'll probably run around 7-8 psi on the street. BTW, the intercooler that I'm using is off an R32 skyline (a sidemount) I believe, and it flows extremely good (HMT is hosting my setup, so check out my sig). The weird think about the knocking that I'm getting is the fact that durring the day I don't get any knocking (at all). When I drive at night time and I push the pedal down, the knocking is very slight, but I can recognize it instantly... I find this strange..

Chacko, did you mean before the intercooler? I hope not.. lol I have no room before the intercooler. I'll start with fitting some type of tank in my trunk... What would be a good size? 2-3 galon?

Re:Dag, I'm knocking...

Ahhh no, 3-4" passed your intercooler. That will avoid having black flow drip into your IC. It should have fully evaporated by then.
If you're running at 6 psi, a 3 gallon reservoir will be plenty. I'd recommend getting a windshield reservoir for any generation eclipse, it already has the fitting on the bottom and they are easily mountable in the trunk.

About your knocking, I'm worried that maybe your IAT is adjusting the timing to much? It would be cooler at night, and I am not positive but doesn't it advance timing if its colder? I don't know what to tell you, this does definently help with reducing knock.

chacko, wanna give away the part # and manufacturer of that boost pressure switch? :)

Re:Dag, I'm knocking...

I think my timing was set too far advanced... I'll rotate my distributor a bit... but when I get the water injection, I'll change it back

I know NAPA has "Hobbs switches" aka boost pressure switches in the $30 range. You can also tear such things off of turbo Saab 900/9000.

What is your spark plug gap at? My Integra was doing a similar thing around 7psi. I dropped my plug gap to .020 and the problem is gone. Just something to check.
