D16Y8 Turbo question.

Hi, I'm fairly new here, and my knowledge of turbo's isn't that great, however after contemplating many possibilities for my engine, a home made turbo seems to be the cheapest and most powerful solution.
I do a ton of city driving. I would say about 85%. My car rarely sees above 3000 rpm. What i need is a really fast spooling turbo. Something that spools between 1000-1500 rpm would be perfect. Problem is, i dont know if such a turbo exists for my d16y8. I have tried searching, but the results are for different engines, and there are many mixed opinions.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

You can get a firefly from a probe. I think that is IHI-RHB5 not 100% sure.

There are smaller out there I am sure.

What do those things spool at? And what about a gt17? I have read that its a small turbo, but couldn't find much info on it.

And the RHB5 is smaller than that.

small turbos lose power up top and I'm sure once you're boosted you'll take your car way past 3k

Re: D16Y8 Turbo question.

Put a t3 42/48 on it and you'll be good. There's no reason to want an overly small turbo. If you put an rhb5 on your car, you WILL want to punch yourself in the penis down the road.

Re: D16Y8 Turbo question.

I'm not looking for big power. What does the rhb5 stop making power at 5k? 6k? I'll probably never see those revs.
I just want a car thats nice to drive. A bit more umph down low, and faster acceleration around town.
Also, if i were to put an rhb5, say from a probe, onto a bone stock d16y8, what kind of numbers would i be looking at. Just an estimate. Would it be a 14 second car at the quarter mile?
Thanks.

Lol. Well not me at the quarter mile, just what would it be capable of.
And everyone agrees that the rhb5 is what im looking for?

Re: D16Y8 Turbo question.

well i got a rhb5 on my d16 and it starts spoolin at about 1500...and starts to die off at about 6...and as far as stealthmode says YES i wish i got a bigger turbo...but an ihi seems to be the rite turbo for u and as far as wut numbers it can put down it really depends on how much psi ur puishin and wut the rest of ur setup is...

Re: D16Y8 Turbo question.

But isn't redline on a stock d16y8 around 7k? So if it dies at 6k its not so bad. Just my logic, but i have never had a turbo so i cant say first hand.

Oh, and whats a good rhb5 to go with? Is there a difference between the probe ones and the subaru ones? And whats the rhb52?

Re: D16Y8 Turbo question.

Just thought of another question. Could a rhb5 make 180hp from a stock d16y8? What psi would it have to be set at?

Re: D16Y8 Turbo question.

10 psi

I have heard as low as 1900rpm and full boost by 2500rpm. I rock the T3 so wait on my answer from someone more sure.
