D16 rods?

I was reading in another forum somewhere, I cant remember where that stock D16 rods cant handle more then 200hp. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about that?

Re:D16 rods?

200, or a little more, 220 maybe.

Re:D16 rods?

Well, the reason im asking is I have a 95 Civic EX D16Z6 and im going to be running a T3/T04b with 450cc injectors and a 255lph fuel pump with a SAFC II to control them. I wanted to run 7psi daily and people said that I could run up to 10 occasionally. I was wondering if i would be ok doing that of if I would have a problem with stock rods or anything?

I run 10-11 psi on my d16y7 all day with a 16g... no probs yet, but will have a t25 on it by the end of today... tired of that 3500-4000RPM spool ----

yep rods are the weak part in a d16z6! have the same problem myself! importparts.com has some good rods for cheap! check em out

Why do people always talk about hp? Your rods don't have to handle hp, they have to handle tourque.

I can have 220 hp with 400 nm of torque and i can have 220 hp with 300 nm of torque. It's just a question of how you setup your boost controller, what turbo you use....

The question has to be: How much torque is good for D16 rods?

Re:D16 rods?

i thought the clutch handled torqe, and the pistons/rods handles hp ???

Re:D16 rods?

hp is the combo of torque and revs.
and yes torque is what will blow these rods away.

we state it in hp because on a d16 u usually get the same torque rating for 220hp when ur turboing

Re:D16 rods?

If you listen to the people who make the rods, they will tell you that RPMs contribute more to the compressive stresses put on the rods than making more torque because of turbocharging.

I don't have enough experience at breaking rods (bent one on my BPT from detonation) but I seem to think most rod failures are actually caused by detonation and not making too much power. A good set of rods can probably withstand a little popcorn while a marginal set will break.

This is a Z6 piston compared to a Mazda B6T rod.

This is what happened to a BPT rod after some detonation (bad fuel pump). You can also see here a good BPT/Miata rod as compared to a 323GT-R rod:

For the record this failed rod was around 2500RPM and I'd just hit 15 PSI. Bad fuel pump caused it to go really lean. Oops :) $100 for a new used set of miata rods, $100 for gaskets and such. Plus I got to P&P my head while it was off... All for a $100 fuel pump I should have changed earlier.

Wow, these Z6 rods look really weak! :P Now, i'm nearly scared of going turbo.... :-\
