custom turbo saab....
I hate my integra so im selling it. and i was thinking what car would be a good car to just get mid 13s out of. but kind of be different than any other person just turboing a honda or DSM. so i thought since all the small T3s are coming off saabs i would do a lil research on them. their compression varies from 9:1 to 9:5:1 and one in the 10s...but i would stay in the 9 compression ratio. Anyone seen any of these turboed. The car just seems to want a nice amount of boost. i think that car with 10-12psi of boost would be a bitchin lil car. any opinions?
i was thinking a 900 series in the 94 range...i think thats when they made improvments to the model. but does anyone know why you dont see a lot of ppl boosting the ---- out of saabs? i mean there has to be some reason. they arent very heavy, they arent very expensive to buy, they have better compression than a honda for the most part....bigger engine...
well ive been researching and found a fairly active message board for saab 900s...and this is what ive come up with so far.
The saab comes stock w/ a T25 which we all know is pretty small. Most upgrade to a T28...but i still think thats small b/c ppl w/ the T28 are boosting in the range of 20-28psi...i was thinking of just hacking off the that flange and getting a T3 flange put on and then going w/ a nice T3 .60/.63 which seems like a great turbo for this paticular setup. Also the FMIC is crap on stock...but i expected that. lots of guys driving them dont know ---- about FMIC's though. They all go and buy the Viggen FMIC...and for those of you not familar with the viggan FMIC...its about 2" thick and has plastic inlets/outlets and the charge pipes it comes w/ is also plastic....i have suggested many times an aluminized mild steel would help their performance by leeps and bounds but they dont understand how its affordable. Even the DIY kids arent very DIY....Ive run into a few problems as i go through the setup in my head...the injectors will need to be upgraded...which isnt a big deal...but you have to replace the whole ECU for like $600 to get the agressive timing and such....which is a bitch...Also the other problem ive found is people claim the exhaust gases are hotter on the Saab than a honda/acura so it is "necessary" to have your turbo both water and oil cooled. and i dont know of any T3 turbo that is oil and water cooled so i may have to stick w/ Mitsubishi turbos which im not too happy with...does anyone know a good turbo that is water/oil cooled? im looking for something out of a junkyard or something to that degree.
The pluses....well there are plenty...some of you may not be saab fans, but i personally think the body style is pleasing to my eye. The compression is 9:2(i believe) comes w/ a stock turbo that can be sold on ebay
, comes with a manifold
, and it comes w/ an external wastegate that is supposidly pretty damn good. So pretty much what is bought for this car are the following
A) a New Turbo(oil/water cooled)
B) New FMIC and piping...
C) BOV (Most of them run Forge...but i think a 1g DSM BOV will be about the same. though Forge is only like $80 which isnt too expensive compared to other BOV's)
D) Injectors (stock are like 258cc)
E) New ECU (about $600 and the guy that tunes them is from sweeden i believe....
)
What do you guys think?
