Custom Holset HE351CW turbo install

12 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, just thought I would post some pics of what I did yesterday. It was a lot of work to remove the old Garrett T3/T04e and replace it with this new beast, but well worth it. The turbo is a Holset HE351CW off a 2004.5 Dodge Ram 3500 (ie. 5.9L Cummins). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Right now it sees 10psi by around 5000rpm and positive pressure about 3800! I got my buddy (Grand Champ) to weld the wastegate shut and fabricate the 4" downpipe and 2" dump pipe. As you can see he did one hell of a good job.  Thanks again Niko! Ill be wraping the downpipe in heat wrap like I did with the dump setup.

Rad fan is melted from spring when I drove across the city with no down pipe to get a down pipe made! I wouldn't recommend anyone doing this. If you do keep the RPM's low and make some kind of deflector from a sheet of tun to protect the rad fan.

For future reference, I had the old dump pipe welded back into the exhaust about 6" from the turbo. It was nice a quiet, but I had nasty boost spike/fluctuations. It would never stay consistent with the spring rate of the waste gate and/or the boost controller. So I don't recommend anyone doing that. Just run it down and parallel with the down pipe. It's better off that way. And honestly its not that much louder!

The old small T3/t04e ran consistent low 12's on 24" slicks at 7psi. The best of which is 12.2 @ 112mph. With the boost turned up to 10psi I ran 12.0 @ 116mph, however the turbo was out of its efficiency as the pressure dropped back to 7psi. This new one should hold nice and steady at 15psi. The stock internal wastegate was set at ~ 25psi. I believe compressor supports up to 650 cfm at a pressure ratio of 2 (15psi). Im shooting for mid to high 11's now!

This car is my daily driver. I get about 35mpg in the city driving normally ie. boosting a few times/day! It weights 2002 lbs as is!

Below are some pics of the setup. The HE351CW is the middle (red) compressor map shown below.

No Im selling the Del Sol. This is much more fun. I don't know why everyone goes with a Garrett. I was never happy with any of the 5 Garretts I have owned. Plus, they are like $600 rather and 2-300 for a Holset or something else.

Any ideas where I can get a filter that will fit in there? It needs to have a 4" clamp and about 5" tall.
