couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

ok so ive found silicone couplers online... but the bastards i found are like $13 per coupler.. is there a cheaper way to do this? i thought about using RAD. hose... but i dont think its made as large as id need to acomodate the 2" charge pipes.... anyone know?

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

If you have a Lowes nearby. Go there, in the drain section, they have hoses. For a 2.5" pipe you will need a 2" coupler. (I know thats a .5" smaller) That is what I am using on my turbo pipes, and they are what i used on my cai. They are about .. 2.95 a piece..and come with 2 hose clamps.

any more info, just email me.

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

They come with the clamps too? That's a deal.

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

yupper. hose clamps. the only thing bad about the couplers.. maybe its my paint though.. prolly the paint on my intake pipes. it smugs under the coupler (you don't see it anyway but it still does)

my friend bought a silcon hose clamp for like 15$ it says "matrix" on it ::).. mine have some letters, i haven't really read them though. but for 2.95$. i think i will stick with mine.
-rollmodel

just remeber, whatever size pipe you are looking to connect, buy a these couplers .5" smaller. (they measure the i.d. of the coupler which will fit over the o.d. of the pipe) ;)

thanks!!! im going to go spend some greeny green green at lowes :)

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

The only thing id suggest is NOT using a rubber connector on the compressor housing. I did and it melted to a nice gooooooooooooooooo.

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

I haven't seen them melt yet... but i will definately keep an eye on it.. thanks.

Come on GrumpyCivic, that just makes a better seal. I thought you would know that by now. ;) ;D ???

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

haha well.. maybe. I popped the hood one day and noticed it was deforming pretty badly, it hadnt fallen apart yet.. but was close. I went ahead and shelled out like 10 bucks and bought a proper silicone reducer. everything else is rubber from homodepot tho!

claytonsmith 12-29-2003 03:48 PM

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

hmm maybe i'll have to forgo being a cheap ass on the coupler for the compressor housing..... but then again i'm using a 14B... and the outlet pipe is fairly far away from the housing.. we'll see

thanks for the info again!

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

try http://www.atpturbo.com
2" silicone connectors for $6 each.
they have reducers, elbows, etc.
the rubber homedepot connectors don't last real long and they will blow out/split if you nick them.

get them from xs engineering, they are 4.50 a piece. +clamps

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

I used nitriel tubing from mcmaster.com.... Its bascially reinforced radiator hose that is made to deal with the oil and other contaminants. I have not had any problems yet.

3 ft is about $24 and I cut them in about 3" pieces. Plently left over.

Airtronics, I need you to do me a favor. Can you go to mcmaster and link us up from the thread. I'm being lazy, and thier site has soooooo much ---- on it, I usually get mad and come back to HMT. That would be swell. Thanks. ::) ???

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

Bounce, are you using the marine hose as the entire charge pipe or cutting it in sections and using it as couplers? Where can I source this stuff?

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

Please, save yourself time and money and DON'T use home depot rubber hose clamps pre-intercooler. The pipes get hot enough to deform the rubber and they will start splitting near the clamps. I learned this the hard way. Also make sure you have something on the end of the pipe like a weld bead or something so the pipes don't slip off.

Installation tip: the clamps are easier to slide on the pipes after you heat them up with a heat gun or hair dryer.

Anyway, here's what you're looking for:
- Go to www.mcmaster.com
- Search for: Coolant Inline Rubber Hose
- Click on the only search result and you'll see it.
- Nitrile/SBR Coolant Hose is the first one down and that's what most people use instead of the expensive Silicone stuff.
http://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/109/...e/5285kp1l.gif

You can also get there by:

- Go to www.mcmaster.com
- Click on Fire Hose and Adapters
- Click on Coolant Inline Rubber Hose
- Scroll down and you'll find the Silicone stuff, but it's way too expensive for HMT'ers.

This is what home depot sells:

http://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/109/...e/4511kp2l.gif
http://www.mcmaster.com/asp/enter.asp?pagenum=066

The flexible PVC body on these clamps enables you to connect pipes made from different materials such as cast iron, plastic, copper, or steel pipe to form a tight seal. Clamps are made of PVC with Type 301 stainless steel bands. Maximum pressure is 4.3 psi; maximum temperature is 120° F. Meet SBCC, BOCA, and UPC codes. CSA certified.

4.3 psi...120°F...do you really trust this stuff?

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

well it looks like im using that rubber stuff after the intercooler........

Anyone know a good place for reducers? i need a few. 1.75" to 2". 2" to 2.5". And what size does the throttle body use?

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

good thread.

• Tube: Nitrile/SBR rubber blend
• Cover: Black nitrile/SBR rubber blend with green stripe
• Reinforcement: 3-ply nylon screen
• Temperature Range: 0° to 212° F

so 212F is enough for the compressor?

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

i just welded all my pipeing together in the biggest sections poss so i could get away with as few couplers as poss. then i went to napa and had them look up radiator hose id's. they found a perfect 2.25" id one for me... was a tight 90 degree elbow with like a 12 inch leg and a 6 inch leg or there about. worked perfect for me. ended up making 3 couplers and an elbow for like 13 bucks.. cant beat that. esp when you know it can handle the pressure and temp as well as any chemicals that might get on it.

Not much if any at all....If I did I'd probably keep it anyways just in case i needed it.

Geez ya cheepskate its only $27 for 3ft!!!! lol

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

oh yeah the nitrile stuff is reinforced so don't even think about trying to stretch it over a bigger pipe; it won't happen.

Re:couplers for charge pipes.. i have a Q?

I am wondering where to get good couplers as well. I have heard decent things of the rubber with 2 clamps at lowes/home depot. I am wanting something a little more firm then that. Has any heard of using radiator hosing for semi's from napa? Thats what i have heard you can buy by the foot and then just hack it up. Let me know if anyone has used this...or somethign similar. Im wanting to know what can be used with around town stores and not having to order off the inet. Like napa, advanced, home depot, lowes, menards...etc. thanks
