Cost of turbo setups
Yeah, I have noticed that on the for sale forums people ask like anywhere from 500-1000s of dollars for turbo setups.. however if a person were to buy the parts seperate off of ebay (i know its kinda generic) but it would cost alot less to put together a homemadeturbo setup. just my 2 cents.. i want some other opinions.

Re:Cost of turbo setups
Once you start trying to piece together a turbo kit the price isn't as cut and dry as you think. ---- adds up, ---- that you don't expect and thats why people sell kits for $1000. And also 99% of the turbo stuff on Ebay is complete ---- and would only last about 5 miles after install
To do a kit right, you need to spend at least $800 to piece it together. Thats my 2cents |
Re:Cost of turbo setups
spent 2500$ with all good parts...didnt really skimp IMO atleast...coulda got hard hot/cold pipes and an FMIC...I am satisfied and it was money well spent(this is also for a honda accord)

Re:Cost of turbo setups
Yeah, understandable. But most of the money comes into a big ass turbo that costs like 400 bucks. All i'm interested in is a safe 7psi probe turbo.. something that spools quickly. I'm really leaning toward going w/ Steve's 1989 Crx DX setup. cheaper that way

Re:Cost of turbo setups
^^^ Just cause its a small turbo doesn't make it safe. With a bigger turbo you'll get more HP out of that 7psi. I built my newest kit for around $800 with a T3/T04E .60/.63 turbo

Re:Cost of turbo setups
haha...I have 110k on my engine and intend to run 10psi once I get my car tuned at 7-8. My friend had 250K on his 240sx and ran it under 10-15lbs for well over a year. 13.4 or better 1/4 mile times on a big trim t3/t4
My turbo was decent price 450$...I spent money evenly though |
Re:Cost of turbo setups
are turbos on stock d-series engines unreliable?? should I be worried?
|
Re:Cost of turbo setups
it's all in the fuel management and tuning

I ran 11psi non intercooled and beat the ---- out of mine and its still holding strong, but now its time to put some real boost through it ;) |

search, theres at least 435 other posts withthe same ------- question and answeres

Re:Cost of turbo setups
actually there's 436.. get it right :P

Re:Cost of turbo setups
I spent about $800 for all the peices that I bought off of here. Everything that my turbo kit has in it was bought on here. The manifold, turbo, oil lines, intercooler and some other random ----. Everything else was home depot.
|
Re:Cost of turbo setups
actually a smaller turbo will put more stress on your engine because its hard to stay out of boost and they loose efficiency in higher rpm (more heat), especially if you go to the freeway often. So your better off getting a bigger turbo than a smaller as long as you dont dog your ---- all the time.

Re:Cost of turbo setups
cheapest way is to hit up a few u pull it junk yards and scavanger factory turbod' cars for parts.

Re:Cost of turbo setups
I spend $1300 on my set up, t25, fmic. I thought it was only going to cost $950, but parts keep on adding up, stuff you don't think about, coolant lines, extra oil lines, wire, wire ties, clamps, new radiator after the FMIC cut off air flow to my barley hanging on old radiator, new head gasket 1 month after install... problems just keep coming up for the first few months until you get the kinks worked out. If your Really on a Tight budget...like you CAN'T spend more than $1000 for everything, then try finding a used kit here on HMT for probably $700 and go with that. I have 120,000+ on my D16Z6 running a daily 10psi with a t25 and AFC-hack, it runs good, fast spool, but not a lot of high end power, probably pushing 170-175 whp.

How is your 1/4 mile pa2play? I'm going with similar setup this summer.

Re:Cost of turbo setups
My budget has changed through the months of building my kit. First i was going to run the fmu and some other stuff, but then w/ the reading i was doing i learned from others mistakes to go a different route. Sometimes things don't work out the way u want them to. My kit is a little over 1k and that's b/c of the xtra's i decide to buy. I bought and xtra turbo, oilpan, and some other stuff. My first turbo was free so it kinda even out. I have an xtra motor in case i blow my current one and suppose to go an pick up another motor next week, but this one is free also. I just couldn't turn it down, it's free.
Always keep in mind things will go wrong, but be prepared for some of the problems that may occur. Ur fuel management should be ur main concern when building a kit so read up more on that. Do a compression test and figure out if it's worth putting a kit on that motor. Do some more reading and you'll be surprise of what some ppl go through. |
Re:Cost of turbo setups
I will have just a little over $300 in my 100%hmt kit.
its going on a 175,000 mile D16z6. i figure if i blow it, the turbo kit is being sold and a JDM D15 will be in its place. :-\ HMT kit as in: hf manifold, AP, turbo and DSM IC -$125 oil lines- $75 piping, got the straight ---- for free 2 crush bends, flex pipe, exhaust mani gasket, and some instagasket (i wasnt payin $30 for a oil pan gasket, insta gasket will work just fine) $30 couplers $20 new boost gauge $35 and im planning on $25 for ---- i havent bought but know im gonna need -that ---- that always pops up. total, thats $310 and I have no BOV yet. :-\ ohh yeah, and you can add in $100 for a used exedy clutch i got to. but that isnt part of the T kit, but to give you a good idea of what can be spent. with the clutch, a little over $400. ;) |

What's ur fuel management for ur kit?

Re:Cost of turbo setups
i had about 1 million dollars in my kit, that upgraded fmu really hurt the pocket big time :P
