Default Cooling problem question.

So it's raining this morning, so instead of taking the turbo-hatch, I was gonna take the NA-Wagon w/A6 swap. Anywho. I go outside, start up the wagon, then go back in and watch tv while it warms up.

I get in the wagon, the air is blowing cold. Hmm... get a couple miles down the road and notice the temp gauge is all the way hot. I speed up a bit and it goes back to normal but as I slow, it goes back to H (air still blowing cold instead of hot), so I take it home and take the hatch.

Is this definitly a bad water pump, or could it possibly just be the thermostat?
