compressor housing swap
I am looking to take my Saab TB0356 turbo I have on my civic and rebuild it, but with a .50 a/r compressor housing, and a .57 trim wheel from a t04e turbo. The stock TB03 has a .48 a/r exhaust housing. And .42 a/r cold side. I want this upgrade to stretch my power band further into my rpm's and maybe give me a little more power. Is this possible or do you think it will do nothing or more bad than good with that set up?

Re: compressor housing swap
i am not 100% sure, but i think machining the compressor housing will be required in order to fit a 57 trim compressor wheel in it, if it is coming from a .42ar cause i think that is a straight t3, and the 57 btrim comes from the t4 compressor family wheels

Re: compressor housing swap
the set up comes with the to4e .50 a/r compressor housing, but other than that it should work?

Re: compressor housing swap
say i leave everything stock but trade the stock .48 a/r exhaust housing for a .63 a/r

Re: compressor housing swap
Hey! I'm in the same boat as you! ;)
I'm currently using a turbo from an RB25DET. Pic: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...bo/turbo04.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...bo/turbo02.jpg I bought a bnew Garret T04B compressor-side assembly from Vecco. Pic: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...T04B/T04B1.jpg Can't wait to put it on my car. I'll let you know how it goes! I'm worried that the .48AR turbine housing wouldn't be able to bypass all the excess exhaust (internally gated) and cause boost creep :-X What do you guys think? |
Re: compressor housing swap
Update: Tried swapping the compressor side today - the thing does not fit! The thrust bearings are off by a lot, so much that even improvising wouldn't work! I'll need to find a real Garrett T3...

Re: compressor housing swap
I'm going to be trying it with some kind of a T4 housing from a small tractor that my bro-in-law has kickin around and my .60/.63 T3. We'll see how it goes.

Re: compressor housing swap
no com, swap the exhaust housing for a .63 from a volvo. Thats what i have, except im still using the nissan compressor housing.`s

Re: compressor housing swap
Volvo had a car with a .63 housing? I thought they were .48s. At least from every Volvo Turbo I've Seen.
|
Re: compressor housing swap
He probably means the svo or xr4ti .63 housing/hotside.
|
Re: compressor housing swap
no, some of the volvo's (maybe its a saab?) have a .63 Its the one with the weird circular indent in the square flange. I had to weld it up and grind it flat.
|
Re: compressor housing swap
Sohcpwr what did you use to weld it just a wire feed or what? I have one with that same exh housing and was wonderign if I absolutly needed to fill that or not?
I got a plate from that has the same flange shape without the raise. Also mine is a a/r .48 on the exhaust side off of a 740 volvo. |
Re: compressor housing swap
I live in the Philippines and there's not much, if any, surplus Euro nor American parts here :P Looking for a surplus Volvo or Ford motor here would be finding a needle in a haystack... We have lots of Japanese parts though, hence the Nissan turbo I have now.
Anyways, there's some guy in the SkylinesAustralia forum who used his RB25DET turbo (same as what I use now) and put in JUST the T04b wheel in it. He machined the stock compressor housing to make the wheel fit, and bored the exhaust hole because he said it surged a lot - spools too early - 15psi @ 2,500rpms! :S I wonder what his compressor AR is after that "surgery"... I'm thinking of taking this route as well. What do you guys think? |
Re: compressor housing swap
I think you need to move to America (legally). :-*

Re: compressor housing swap
Why? I love it here! :8
I'm gonna try doing the same thing he did and see what happens... |
