Chop off stock manifold flange and weld on T3 flange?
Does anyone have experience with chopping off the stock flange on a manifold and welding on a t3 flange? Can anyone estimate how much a shop would charge for this?

The HMT NE install went like that. I think Bermanators Turbo is in the street by now though.

Re:Chop off stock manifold flange and weld on T3 flange?
if its cast a lot of shops wont bother with it. i had 2 t25 flanges made for 35$. where i live at no shop would fool with it. i found a guy that welds on cast and steel i got lucky and found him. if you do find someone make sure they know what there doing when they work with cast.

Thanks for the info, is welding a cast manifold just a lot harder for some reason?

yeah welding cast is generally not something you want to do.

Re:Chop off stock manifold flange and weld on T3 flange?
people do it all the time with the d16y7 exhaust mani. cut the cat off and weld a turbo flange and there ya go. hmt style with no adapter plate.

Re:Chop off stock manifold flange and weld on T3 flange?
Yup, ive doen this on my setup and it works great!
I didnt even brace the manifold to the block. Runnign liek this for nearly 6 months and no cracking. I used a mig welder, set it on highest voltage (4) and heated up the cast and pooled the molten onto the steel flange. Let it cool down REAL slowly, and it shoudl be fine. I plan on doing this again when making my T3 manifold, theres nothign I see wrong with it. alot of the times u just have to take what ppl tellu and throw it out the window, ull save alot of money and if it fails at least u learned firsthand. |

You need a carbon arch welder.

Re:Chop off stock manifold flange and weld on T3 flange?
do what crxdan said...basically weld a big bead on the cast and let it flow into the flange...did that on a y7 manifold a while back and it looked great and never broke

Re:Chop off stock manifold flange and weld on T3 flange?
I did it to my turbo. Kept blowing gaskets and near lost the turbo once.
Used my 50 yr old Forney Arc weld with 6013 rod. Cranked the heat(I mean CRANKED) did 2-3 passes per side (4 altogether) It Held all summer and when I took it of the car a month ago, no cracks or nothing. Give her a try. If it doesn't work, it was a 30 dollar manifold anyways. |
Re:Chop off stock manifold flange and weld on T3 flange?
I had my muffler shop weld a y7 mani to my T3.
Never cracked. Never had a problem. |
