cheap turbo kit hopefully installed this winter
 

So I have been planning to put a turbo kit on my car, and to be able to get it on sooner instead of later (this winter break) I think I will be going the really cheap route.
Here is what I want to have: ohh ya obd2 97 ex (d16y8)


Chipped ecu 145 uberdata with basemap for my setup p28 obd-1
injectors dsm 450cc 50 ebay
turbo (dsm) 200 14b most likely, but maybe some sort of t3 possible
fmic 150 johnnyracecar
bov 30 1g dsm prob, could be anything cheap that works
obd harness 83
oil lines 90
manifold 120
dp 100
guage pod bezel 30
boost gauge 45
a/f gauge 45
boost controller 15
vacuum lines 16
ic piping + connectors 100

$300 dyno tuned by pro, to about 10 psi





So that is what I want to have, but at first I want to go even cheaper, so i plan on going with a side mount intercooler, ghetto ic piping from home depot (prob dryer ducting, its aluminum flexible piping, can handle air up to 450 degrees, not sure about the pressure) (or some other ghetto cheap piping, like old intake piping) and just use the custom basemap without tuning, and just run somewhere around 3.6 or 5.8 psi. Then after about two or three months I would get a fmic and actual piping, and then get it tuned up to 8 or 10 psi.

So what do you guys think of this plan?
what do you think of the 14b turbo?

Some things like ic piping I'd rather only do it right and do it once. If you're going to change it in 2 months anyways then why waste the money on a smic and cheap piping.

I will have lots of time over winter break, but after that I will have drastically less free time to install a turbo kit. just an idea, i just am really getting anxious to boost, i probally shouldn't rush things, but its too hard not to

put a little more into the plumming. i bought my ic piping from a local muffler shop. included 4 2.5'' 180s ,and a half of stick of 2.5" pipe which is like 5 foot. the total cost was like 70 dollars. it whouldnt take that much time to install it either. you want something to hold up to heating and cooling, psi going up and down. all those things can fatigue thin metel.

going your way with the home depot route may cost less at first, but in the long run youd want to go with quality and craftsmanship. and when i say craftsmanship i dont mean popping the hood to see the home depot hvac isle.

Arer you going to run this all into your half inch stock exhaust?

thats another thing. you need at least a 2.5" to 3" exhaust. the last i checked 3" steel at the muffler shop was like 5 dollars per foot. they come in 10 foot sticks. or, you could run to you local junkyard and chop either some 2.5" or 3" off of a junker truck. as far as mufflers. im gonna use a 24" resonator; muffler shop sells those for $50 a piece.

First off, is stock exhaust REALLY 1/2"? and second, I Already have exhaust, and I know would be better off doing things right, but if i can do something that is safe enough but may be considered ghetto and can help me to get it on earlier, then it may be worth it. I plan to have front mount intercooler and piping that will cost about 260, so if i can just use a smic and some cheaper piping for $50 then I can save $200 untill i have that money to put what I want on. Same with the basemap instead of tuning. I would like to tune once I have the setup I will stay with, so after the intercooler is put on. So with a basemap from xenocron (with uberdata) which they say is to be "specific" for your setup, would that be sufficent for a lower psi setup, like 6 or under for about 2-3 months?

I also would eventually like to get the heads ported and polished, and get a cam, pistons, and rods, so I definately don't plan on waiting till I have 1000 for that stuff. But instead, I will get it with the setup I want, with the fmic, tuned to 8-10 psi, and then in 6-8 months if the turbo seems to work well with the car, then maybe I will buy the parts, and then get it tuned again.

by the way, thanks for your input guys, even though I know going the cheap route may not be best, it almost seems that going cheaper at first may be a good idea to get me started, so thanks for the advice, hopefully you guys will keep me in check before I do something too stupid.
