Catch can...junk?

I don't want to take up alot of room with a catch can setup, what do ya think of this thing...(not sure why you need a filter, but I could always take it out, it seems like it would restrict the flow) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6763

Re:Catch can...junk?

i don't know much about catch cans. i just put a small valve cover breather filter and i installed a new pcv valve. i realy would'nt bother with one of those unless i have a 400hp beast.

Re:Catch can...junk?

The only reason I'm messing with it is becuase I get a little bit of oil smell after I boost hard but I can't figure out where it's coming from...I have NO smoke from the exhaust...I've checked that charge pipes and the downpipe too...nothing. This is the only guess I have left.

bahaha, thats fitting for air tools. Some people are pretty clever.

Re:Catch can...junk?

could i install a catch can after the pcv valve? that lets out some oil last time i ckecked.

----! I knew that looked familiar! looks like I'm going to tool king...you think it will work? or too hot?

Re:Catch can...junk?

tool king? how about a sqaure can like an olive oil can, attach 2 homedepot barbed fittings to the top and buy some 3/8th" rubber hose at the auto parts and a four pack of small clamps! i love the autoparts store :-* paint the can and fittings flat black, those things can't cost more than $8.00. if you don't have an olive oil can, dollar stores sell some cheap oilive oil that come in nice sized cans. build it, paint it flat (JDM) black and zip tie it down.
pat. pend.

Get it from the intake mani...

Re:Catch can...junk?

I built a catch-can from an empty WD-40 can. I fiberglassed in 3 nipples ( two on top, one on the bottom ), and then painted it like a barbershop pole, but using red and black instead of red and white...

I haven't using it since I haven't built a intake/air filter system for the turbo yet. The catch can needs vaccum, and never boost, which can only be had between the air filter and the turbo's compressor housing/intake.

If you tap into the manifold ( intake ), then you'll get a vaccum, until you hit boost, then you'd actually be forcing presurized air BACK INTO the valve cover/crank case, which is the oppisite of what a PVC/catch-can is designed to do.

Re:Catch can...junk?

could you use a check valve?

89dxhunchback 09-14-2004 02:04 PM

Re:Catch can...junk?

No, b/c then the presure coming outta the valve cover will have no place to go ( but out the valve cover gasket, out the oil pan gasket, or the piston rings ).

Re:Catch can...junk?

No, turn the check valve around the other way, so it will only allow vacuum in, but close under boost

The vlave cover still won't be able to breath under boost when it needs it the most.

Re:Catch can...junk?

Ok, I'll take the question the next step....what exactly is getting hurt inside the crankcase if I leave the stock PCV setup? I'm running 9psi around town and I have no oil on my cheesy little breather filter...sufice it to say, if I am shortening the life of the motor any more that I have to, I will do it.

Does anybody know this?

Re:Catch can...junk?

your pcv valve is being forced shut by the boost when it needs to be open, it might eventually blow some gaskets or even ringlands.

this mod is worth the $25 or so and 15min installation!!!
