Carsound Cat melt with FI or muffler shop blowing smoke up my ass?

Not that it matters anymore since the thieves took my whole exhaust, but for future reference:

I had a 2.5" carsound cat (bought from our sponser racing-solutions) and my muffler shop was telling me that it would eventually melt with the turbo... is that true? They were trying to sell me some $300 "racing" cat... I thought it was bullshit so I declined. Even if it was true, I wouldn't want to pay ------- $300.

Mine didn't melt, but I was running rich and I couldn't tune due to a bad Willems Burner and it burnt all of the catalyst out of it.

Totaly BS. As long as the cat isn't too small for the application then you're fine, or unless you're running some ungodly egt's in which case your motor would probably melt first.

That and emissions testing is required in WA (most counties).

IF your EGT's are so hot your melting your cat, you've got more to worry about than a new one.

Yeah, I was pretty sure they were just trying to make me buy their ---- (I'm sure some people fall for it).

But when I was like, well... how much do you sell it for? The guy went and had some sales lady come talk to me. She starts blabbing about how great theirs is and how I'm going to have to replace my cat soon if I don't... I was just like, TELL ME HOW MUCH YOU SELL IT FOR. $325.00. I almost punched her in the face.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Catalytic converters are either a ceramic or metal core type. The cat burns anything that is not burned by the engine. If you are running excessively rich, the unburnt fuel leaving the engine is ignited in the cat, and will melt the cat's inner core. The ceramic core type cat suffers greatly from this situation. The matalic honeycomb/core type cat is the best one for high performance engines (Import Tuner, 06).

yes to a certain point. The cat can only handle so much. Which is why if you run stupid rich, the cat is forced to breakdown more than it normall does, so it can melt down. The cat can also fail if it runs too clean (which is almost impossible). I got a 3" magnaflow cat from summit, and i tested it with a 5 gas analyzer and the results were pretty good. The cat has a temp change of 57 degrees (over 50 means the cat is working properly), and my car can pass a 2 speed idle test. All i did was dyno it and throw a 3" cat on it :6
