Car Stumbles

OK well this just seems to be happen lately I guess because of the colder weather but I'm not 100% sure whats causing it...Oh this is for the 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege...When it gets to about 1/4 tank if I get above 3500rpms it seems to stumble, jerk, hesitate a little and the lower the gas gauge goes the worse it gets...it never happened till it started to get colder...I was thinking I would get a new fuel filter in the chance maybe it got clogged...and I was already in the market to get some new spark plugs, the battery was supposedly replaced when I bought the car (june) but I'm think this is more fuel related but I am just looking for some Ideas, car only has about 40,000 miles on it and its just seems a little wierd, it runs rich from the factory and normally bogs at fuel throttle, ok well anyone got any ideas? thanks...Matt

change the fuel filter, spark plugs, oil. if that doesnt help check the fuel pump. and if that fails keep it above a 1/4 of a tank? doesnt it still have a warranty though?

Yea i think I still have warrenty till 50,000 but I'll have to check but those damn bastard wil take my car look at it tell me i need to make another appointment so they can get parts or tell me it isn't covered or it dosen't do it for them and then it won't get fixed or it I won't have it forever, I already had it to the deal 4 times for my stereo :-\

Well i change the oil religiously every 2500-3000 miles using mobile 1....I'm just curious why it is doing no, it seems to be a little harder to start on those extra cold mornings, one day it acctually almost didn't start I had to give it a little gas, I also have a small vac leak I hear when I hit full boost, Don't know if these could be related things, thanks for the suggestions

I had a beretta a long time ago that did exactly what you are decribing...the strainer had fallen off of the fuel pump. I popped it back on and all my troubles were gone. Another way to check to see if that may be the problem is to turn some hard corners and accelerate..if it boggs down, it's much more likely that this would be the problem.

I was hopeing thats it wasn't something like, I know my way around the crx but not so firmilar with the mazda yet, hopefully I can get to it without dropping the tank ;) thats my last inexpensive solution and I guess if I am going to the trouble maybe I will just upgrade the fuel pump while im there...anyone else got some ideas?

Start off with eliminating the fact that H2o may be in your fuel.

Yeah, I agree...change your fuel filter before you do anything else. Go for the easy/cheap fix first. If you have a fuel pressure gaudge, check your pressure under load. This will isolate the problem to the fuel system, if that is what it is.

I've had this happen to me 3 times now when it gets below 1/4 tank...figured that could have been the case the first time or maybe just some bad gas but seems to be a consstant problem now

I'll have to try and change the filter and see if that eliminates the problem, thanks
