Can I twist/rotate my Turbo ends?
 

Hi, I have started up a turbo Harley project for an 86 FXR. It’s a stealth blow-through setup (with no intercooler at this stage) putting out around 5psi, which I feel is a safe limit for the basically stock engine. The turbo I have chosen is a Mitsi TF035HM which is fairly generic and was the stock unit off a Subaru Forrester car.

Anyway, the problem I am trying to solve is that while the unit is physically okay to fit to the bike – albeit with bugger all room to spare, the oil drain pipe and air out nozzle are pointing in the wrong direction relative to the exhaust housing. It’s like I need to rotate the oil drain pipe 90 degrees and the air out nozzle 180 degrees, so that everything will line up.

So, to my question…. Is it okay to loosen the bolt holding the large clamp around the exhaust housing and then to rotate the housing so that the oil drain pipe points in the right relative direction. If so does the same apply to removing the giant “C” clip from the intake side and rotating that housing so that the nozzle point in the right direction.

Hope that’s not too confusing…I have a picture so will see if I can attach it as well.

I asked the same question. Don't feel bad. No you can not rotate them. You have to u se them the way they come. (Feel free to rotate)

Well that was bloody easy!

Undid the V clamp sprayed everything with WD40 and left for a couple of days and then some well placed taps with a steel wedge and it all just came apart. I got the dremmel tool out and cleaned up the surfaces (AND ground off the silly little locating pin) and then a light coating of copper grease and assembly lube and we are back in business.

The intake side was a little more challenging with that darn "C" clip but it too came apart with persistence and is not in the direction needed. Those locating pins are buggers, especially when your not expecting them
