Building a turbo kit- What do i need and how much $?

I want to build up my own turbo kit. I am new to turbo's and don't know much about them. I was going to run N/A but for my little D i think she needs some turbo.
I want to build a good kit, the cheapest way i can, still with a good kit. I can weld. 95 ex d16z6

Right now i wanna pice together a kit buying pieces here and there. Im in no hurry to install a turbo kit. I wanna know the basic things i can buy now and work on, paint, weld, ect (not fittings hoses ect.)

What are the basics that i can buy now, and how much $ (turbo, manifold ect)
Turbocharger. Are the 14b and T3 the best medium sized turbo for the $?
What im i supposed to look for in a turbo? Spins freely with no "shaft play"? Im guessing thats movement that isnt supposed to be there. How much do 14b's and T3's sell for online?

Manifold- I've heard the best manifold to modify is the 88-91 Honda CRX STD/DX, with a welded on adapter plate to match your turbo. Adapter plates are around $25, but how much for a stock manifold? I plan on welding on the correct plate, sand blasting it, then powdercoating it (i know people who do all of those)
Can i customize my cheap ebay header for a turbo header w an adapter plate?

Homemade downpipe- How big? 2.5 or 3"? Are there downpipe flanges that you can buy?

Injectors- DSM 440cc, 450cc injectors? I see some go for $60-$100? What is a good deal?

My motor- d16z6 with short ram intake, 4-2-1 header, aem pullies, Soon to have AEM cam gear. I was going to buy a cam for NA but now that i want to turbo can i run a stock cam or should i buy a turbo one for lower compression? How much, where at, and whats the 3 best turbo cams?
Will running stackable headgaskets (2) lower compression, and is that needed or not? In the future i plan on slightly porting the head and intake. Do i need to change anything in my bottom end? I heard ZC dohc pistons are good for d16's but i believe that was not for turbos.

Do i need to change my OBD?
and
What is a wastegate and can i block it off?

Thanks alot guys im trying to understand everything more clearer. Ive been reading alot of info on here, and homemadeturbo.com. Thanks

waaay too broad of a question, but good to see you here. best bet is to shop around for the turbo if you're getting a used one; try junkyards and dsm/ turbo ford guys. No, you cant just put an adapter on your header for a turbo, but you could hack it up and make a new manifold out of it. You wont need to lower your compression, and your bottom end will be fine for moderate boost levels. all your flanges can be found either on ebay or the classifieds here (a member called bmc racing has nice ones). welcome and post more specific questions after you read through more of what the site has to offer

I know i couldnt just put a adapter flange on my header, i ment hack it and make a new manifold.

Does anyone know what turbo is on a Ford 2.3 turbo 2300?
I dont know what turbos are the best bang for the buck.

I didn't even bother to read your post since by the topic I could tell that you haven't read the faq. I know it is complicated and all, but if you read it you will learn. there is a really nice newbie link towards the end of the thread I think, go check it out.

the turbo on the 2.3 fords depends on whether it is auto or manual, the year, and the car it is in...im not 100 positive on which comes with which so i wont guess, but some have little ihi turbos (the newer thunderbirds), while the others have either a 60/48 or 60/63 t3's in different trims

The 2.3 T- Bird automatics came with the .48 A/R turbine housing to provide quick spool up & to give torque down low. The 5 speeds came with the .63 housing normaly found in the lighter mustangs. For street driving I would go with the T-3 with the .42 compressor & .48 turbine.

I feel like an ass for saying that since you actually know what you are talking about for the most part.

staking head gaskets is generally a bad idea I've heard that most people end up blowing them. cams don't lower compression, but a turbo cam might help you a little, I don't know if it's worth it. you don't need to change obd, there are systems for all of them. a wastegate vents exhaust gas so it doesn't spool the turbo and make more boost than you need. you can block a wastegate off, in the case of internal ones, so that you can get an external one in you want, but a wastegate of some kind is definetely needed.
