Default Building my own Hybrid, compressor swaps and what not??

So I drove my roommates CRX yesterday, and decided that it sucked.

Between the lagmonster turbo, and the slipping clutch, I might as well have been driving my grammas corsica.

So I have convinced him to change the turbo around. Here is what I mentioned possibly doing.

Current turbo is a garrett t3/t04e 57 trim with a .50AR compressor housing and .63 AR exhaust housing. The exhaust housing is obviously too huge for a d16. My suggestion to him was that we pick up another garrett t3 .42/.48 special and swap his compressor and wheel onto it so he retains his compressor size and ditches that .63 for a .48 exhaust side... My only concern here is throwing the shaft out of balance swapping compressor wheels.

Is that gonna be a problem or no? suggestions on a different turbo? We are gonna build this block soon so I don't want to step down on the compressor side really.

I may not be right about this...but can't you just change the turbine housing to a .48 A/R? I've seen some parts and peices on Ebay every now and then. Mabe someone on here has an extra housing?

as for swapping the compressor wheel, I don't think it would work. If the turbine and shaft are not properly balanced, it probly won't last an hour. But hey, mabe you'll get lucky.

i don't think the exhaust wheel from the .63 would fit into the .48 housing.

depends if they are the same stage.
example: a ford .63 to a ford .48 uses the same exhaust wheel. (stock)

if different stages, use the exhaust wheel/shaft from the .48 turbine housing, but the balance might be off.

you should be able to swap the exhaust housing and wheel no problem. but yes, it will fall horribly out of balance because turbos are balanced to the stock wheels. you will have to send the center section off to be rebalanced after the swap is done. i know there is a place in Spokane that does balancing, and i find it hard to believe that you wouldnt be able to find somewhere in Portland or Seattle that does it as well.

check the yellowpages and call around if you want it done locally. if not, you could send it off to blaast performance and im sure they will do it for you. it shouldnt be too expensive

Exactly. Just swap the housings jason. Is his turbo a stage 1 or stage 3 turbine? I have a perfect condition T3 .48 stage 3 housing if thats what youll need

I have that same turbo and i'm gonna be running it on my crx as well. I figured it was gonna be laggy but not that laggy. There's a decent condition t3 .42/.48 in the u pull it by my house so i'm gonna take it apart there and pick up the exhaust housing. Let me know if you find anywhere where i can balance everything.

not sure what stage it is, i wasn't involved in building or installing his kit.

sending it off isn't really an option, this is a daily driver.

Just find out what "trim" the exhaust housing is. I'm not sure if the 57 trim applies to the exhaust housing, but simply measuring the inducer/exducer will get you trim. Find a .48 housing with the same trim and be done with it
