Default Boosting my z24

So... I have this small, tiny problem with my car as of now. I'm driving around with a spun bearing (oops). Oh well, i'm getting another motor from the boneyard with a few less miles on it. Except this time, I'm going to boost it from to go. I know theres really no tuning for my car. But whaddya want, gm is gay. I'm not the best when it comes to boost so I had a few questions. Would it be easier to put the kit on while the engine is out of the car. Would be easier but then I have to worry aout fitment and things touching when the engine goes back in the car. Also, a kid I knew turboed his z24 and said the hardest part was tapping into the pan. Is this really that hard? Lastly, he had some hanheld device on his dash that showed him a/f and some other ---- with a few buttons on it. What is this and do I need one? Lastly, if I'm not getting a body kit and keeping the stock front bumper, would it be easy to hack it and fit a nice little fmic in there or would I be better would a sidemount off a saab or something? Thats about it. Thanks for any help you guys can give me. By the way, its a 98 with the 2.4.

you dont need a body kit first of all..but I guess that is entirely up to you
it would be easier to put the turbo on once it got in the car...which is still going to be kind of hard due to the set up on your car...header is at the back and the IM is at the front...might have some fitment problems if you install everything before the engine goes on...you have several tuning choices...FMU-possibly an APEX-i AFC-megasquirt, uberdata...

AFC hack is simple, read about it in the engine managment forum FAQ, same principles should apply to your car. Timing gets a little advanced tho.

There's also Megasquirt, which is cheap DIY EFI managment, although hooking it all up is fairly complicated, there are a few users on this board who use it.

I personally would put in on once the engine is back in the car, just for fitment issues.

No, take a look at the different fittings used on HMT setups, and the JB weld love.

A/F gauge, hopefully coming off a wideband O2 sensor otherwise it's useless. You don't need it, but it's good to have for tuning.

All go, no show :P I've never seen a body kit on a Cavy that I liked, but it's up to you. I'd just hack up the stock bumper till you could stick a FMIC in there. There's also the option of just putting an OEM SMIC off a Saab or something at the front of your car.

Hope this helps, maybe some of the rare GM guys will chime in on this.
