Boosting an 87 Jetta GLi...Anyone???
 

Ok, after I finished my HMT my friend, who hates hondas, decided to boost his VW. His car looks awesome, custom paint job, dark silver metallic, 17's and a nice exhaust. That's all he has but the car looks damn good. The car has a weird intake/fuel injection system. The injectors are like on a box by the passenger fender and then some lines run the gas back to the cylinder, weird ass ----. Have anyone seen this engine before, or boosted one of these before? Any info would be good, I've been searching but can't find anything on yahoo/google on that year model.

don't boost that engine, not worth the effort. Get a 2.0 from the mk3s on up and boost that. I turboed a 98GTI with a 2.0, has injectors like ours, and will bolt into that older chassis. You can get them super cheap too, since everyone wants VR6s and 1.8ts They are like the D-series of Honda motors, and the tranny might even bolt up, send him to VWvortex.com

what you're looking at in your friend's VW is called CIS - constant injection system. simply put, it's a form of mechanical fuel injection... people have turbocharged CIS motors in the past (i've only read about it), but it's not worth the trouble IMHO.

He even has a 16v motor on his garage that has a regular fuel rail and injectors, but the electronics don't work out, it bolts in but the computer doesn't plug in and he didn't want to go thru all that ----, but I guess is better in the long run. He went to a Shop to ask if it coul be done, the guy quoted him $1500 just to make the pipes and put everything together, my friend had to give him a manifold, turbo, downpipe, intercooler, all the pricey parts, I told him ---- that, If he's going to juts buy everything, we'll do it. I'll research this more to see what we can do

really if hes got a nice 16v motor sitting hes better off dropping the dough on a nice after market EFI setup. something like SDS etc would work good.

I'm in the process of turboing my grey '87 Jetta GLI right now.

The 2.0 from a newer car should bolt up physically, and it makes a really good turbo mill. Wiring is another story, the 2.0 8v is almost a plug+play swap into later (<90) cars, but the wiring in earlier cars makes it more of a challenge.

I've ditched the CIS completely and I run Megasquirt with the stock ignition for now, but I want to garbage the what's left of the ignition and use an MSD box or something before I actually put on the turbo.
I also considered SDS, but I am a cheapass so I had to use Megasquirt.
A normal set of injectors and a fuel rail bolt up to the stock intake. You just have to get these injector inserts from the dealer, and there is no factory fuel rail for the 16v engine- I had to pay entirely too ------- much for mine.
