boost gauge, vac pipe
when hooking up your boost gauge some people say hook it off your FPR vac pipe others say put it in the intake? can anyone set me straight on this? i had a qualified mechanic tell me to put it down the intake a couple of days ago however guys off of here have told me to hook it to my FPR vac pipe?!?!?!?
thanks |
Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
yes on the fpr pipe because the intake will have 0 VAC at idle because the throttle door is closed so the engine isnt sucking anything in through there.

Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
not trying to hijack your thread. But boost gauges read pressure, and vac. Do bovs and wastegates only read pressure?
|
Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
BOV works by seeing a difference in psi in the intake tube compared to the intake manifold. WHen the throttle door slams closed the intake tubes gets a quick pressure build and forces the bov open until it either equalizes or the throttle is opened (which equalizes it too).
WG boost only, usualyl spring loaded right? |
Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
Waste gates only work off of pressure. Some BOVs are open under vacuum all the time, the good ones open under vac/boost conditions only when you need them to.

Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
So BOV and Wastegate can use charge pipes as sources correct?
|
Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
the wg usually gets its reading from a nipple on the compressor side of the turbo

Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
where is the FPR pipe because at idle my boost guage reads 0 vac. would the vac line from my BOV work as a source to hook up the BG and read vac?
|
Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
whats a BG? u mean WG? there's usually a nipple for boost on the compressor of the turbo. If you put the WG vac line at the intake manifold it might take too long to read the boost and spike real bad.

Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
Yeah, just run the wastegate to the compressor side of the turbo. It's much easier, and you will have less line to run. And as for the boost guage, hook it up to the FPR line. I just installed mine last weekend and it works fine on the FPR. Your fuel pressure regulator has a vacuum line going to it. you'll see it when you look at the fuel rail. just Tee into that.

Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
The BG would be the boost guage. And my wastegate is external and already hooked to the nipple on the compressor housing. Problem is that my BG (boost guage) is also hooked to the same nipple and it reads no vac. So I was curious where a good vac source would be ;)

Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
connected BG to the FPR vac line. i think im seeing vaccum on idle on my boost gauge, is this normal? I'll double check later today. when the turbo starts to spool should it be hitting the zero mark? and then increasing thereafter?
thanks |
Re:boost gauge, vac pipe
Yes, vacuum at idle is normal. Thats what you want to be seeing. And when you hit the gas pedal, it should move to 0 and as the turbo spools it should read boost.
