bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

i geared up a home turbo on my d15 and it works pretty good .................my friend has a 93 bmw 325i and seen my setup and decided to boost his bmw he priced a kit ,but it was to much money.my question is can he gear up a home made turbo on his bmw?
what turbo would work best?and what about the fuel setup?

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

Just different fabrication going on. I6 right? If the manifold terminates very close to the engine, picture how well a turbo/adapter plate would sit in the engine bay. If a new mani is needed, then time to start snooping around for a custom or other stock mani that will allow good turbo placement.
I would check out some BMW boards to find out what kind of air metering the 325 uses, (MAF, speed density....) So you can see what options are open for you as far as fueling is concerned.
An SMC might be a good option for you.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

go into the engine bay measure up some stuff and make some manifold drawings. buy some weld els and goto work. and also u will need the manifold gasket to get a plate machined.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

i love inline 6's!!! Well with that out of the way man it would be sweet if you turbocharged his 325. I would go with shortyz on this one and try to draw out about what the mani would have to look like to fit. Buy the weld els and go to work. I6's were meant for turbos in my opion jsut like I4's. He will have himself a regualr M3 sleeper!

Last_Mohican 04-24-2003 07:01 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

Well about the sleeper m3 i take that back he probably will have a M3 killer on his hands muahha!! His car is 190hp and a 95 m3 is 240hp and a good HMT kit can add more than 50 hp especially since it is an inline 6. Be funny to go around beating next to last generation m3's.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

M3 is not about horsepower, put it on the track next to the turbo 325i and watch the shame on the 325i drivers face.
Remember hp #'s dont tell you everything about a car... the curb weight and gearing play big factors.

Last_Mohican 04-24-2003 09:02 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

well that is not fair if you are gonna track it then an aftermarket suspension on a 325 would blow away a m3 and yes hp is not everything. I am a big Lemans and formual 1 fan myself. I am not a fan of drag racing. Comparing m3 suspention to that of a 325 is jsut stupid i hope you dont think i was that stupid. I prefer auto X over drag racing so good brakes and good suspension is very important. And a supercharged vehicle will most of the time walk a turbo version of the same car around the track. I mean Audi has proven that thier s4 is badass on the track as the s4 has been owning in one of the gt series along with an NSX. Dont assume i dont know much just beacause i got excited about a turbo 325.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

yeah right, just adding diff suspension compenents won't make a big box of a car handle better than a little sporty one. or i'd like to see it :)

Last_Mohican 04-24-2003 10:10 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

ya but it will make it much better than it was. I consider old mustangs to handle like ---- as my freinds 92 mustang does...but there is a full suspension kit that can make his mustang pull 2gs on the skidpad!! That is taking a shitty mustang and making it handle nice although skidpad is in no way the absolute judgement of handleing..by a long shot.Course this suspension is well into 2 grand if i remeber correctly.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

ok boys what turbo would be the best for this job?...see i m running a turbo off a mx6 ,and i can get my hands on another ....would that be any good?..........we were checking out his engine bay and there isn't a hole lot of room...........we were also looking into a supercharger kit but they wanted like 6000, way to much .so i think the best way is a home turbo

Last_Mohican 04-24-2003 10:45 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

if you want to go supercharger your best bet is get a used vortech from a 5.0 mustang guy. I talked my friend into buying a vortech for his mustang. Vortechs are centrifugal superchargers ..in other words they are turbos with a pulley on the exhaust side. If you want to go turbo the best turbo is what ever you can get your hands on but I would say try to get a turbo off a manual 86-89 t-bird. Those are pretty big turbos. Also you could try getting a tdo5 turbo off a talon or eclipse look at the threads that identify what turbos come on what cars.

I jsut realized i answered your post on the mazda turbo. that is probably a little bit small of a turbo for the inline 6 but it is your call.It would spool real fast.

A buddy of mine just put a turbo on his 87 325is and it's nice. I'm trying to find his site to post some of his pics. I'll add it when I find them. He's got a nice setup and it's a lot of home made stuff.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

take a look at the active autowerks kit for the m3, and try to copy their parts list. they dump out 408 whp, and the parts they use scream price mark up beacuse of the bmw name. their fuel management is like an fmu or something. if our machinist can cram a 383 stroker in his 89 325, why not a turbo in the 94? :)

thecivicking 04-25-2003 12:59 AM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

the autowerks kit comes with a TD06 turbo...what would that come off of?

oh yeah.....what kind of boost do u guys think a stock 325i can handle?

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

i've got pics of a twin turbo kit from i belive AVON (huge tunner of german cars back in the day, still do some sweet work) for the old "big six" motor in the e28 533i/535I cars ... the stock motors pushed around 190 hp/ft-lb... this kit pushed it to well over 300 :) w/ an air/water IC

give me a day or so and i'll get pic's up here for it... it's def on the lo-tech side of twin turbo setups (parralelle turbo system using a single manifold, ideal would be 2 seperate manifolds making it like 2 I3 motors)

anyway let me find em and get em up on the web :)

93' 325i has potental for a turbo BUT, the programing for that car is expensive, about $325.00 plus getting bigger injectors(rs) and big boy thottle body to help out, it is gonna take you some time on that car i used to do all the superchargers that can through our bmw dealership but we have slowed down on the aftermarket parts, any question just ask,,,

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

not sure you can get a tdo6 but you can get a tdo5 off of a talon or eclipse.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

I THINK SOME OF MY BUDS CAME ACROSS SOME TD06 OR T06 NOT SURE BUT THEY ARE SELLING THEM FOR $295.00 NEW OUT OF THE CRATE

Last_Mohican 04-25-2003 12:56 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

if that is true that is a good deal. If it is a td06 that is a real nice turbo.

THRESHOLD 04-25-2003 05:12 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

it should be brand new out of the crate the guy bought a warehouse and found a couple of crates in the corner i think he is selling them on ebay not sure i will find out

Last_Mohican 04-25-2003 05:16 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

well if it is a tdo6 for that much i say jump on it fast.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

i am wondering if it can be used on a d series just asking

Last_Mohican 04-25-2003 05:24 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

If i am correct it is one huge freakin turbo and i am sure there wold be lag but hopefully a person with a d series boosted can tell you if it is jsut too big of a turbo or not.

turboboy 04-25-2003 05:24 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

its way too big for you if its a tdo6 in my opinion, but worth it to buy and sell

Last_Mohican 04-25-2003 05:26 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

ya i was thinking the 20g tdo6 was a it big but i am with him just buy it and sell it for more.

Amallick 04-26-2003 03:19 AM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

well if i can slap a 20g td06 on my 2.0 4 cylinder eclipse gsx, why not on an inline 6 thats bigger, and has 2 more cylinders?

Last_Mohican 04-26-2003 01:38 PM

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

I was refering to the fact that it might be too big for a d series. It would not be too big for the inline 6....sorry i guess i went off on a tangent.

Re:bmw 325i homemade turbo..............

I would recomend you find a CT26 from a supra turbo. It's a similar engine size and easily able to make the power you want. Otherwise I would go for a couple of small Mitsu turbos off the old Chryslers. I know from experience that these work fine in pairs on a 2.2 4cyl so they must work on a 2.5 6cyl. Or how about finding a used twin sequential setup from a twin turbo supra? lots of people are tossing these setups in favour of a single turbo so there must be some around.
