Birth of my 3" exhuast!

While my car is in the air waiting for the parts for a new HG I fiqured I pop up some pic of what I did Saturdays with a welder, bandsaw and 130.00 CAN of materials (3"Flex Pipe and 10 Ft for Pipe)

First the hacked up 3" to 2.25 to 2.5 to 2.25 that will be replaced
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/1.jpg
First cut a slash peice of 3" pipe. I used mostly 7.5deg cuts so 6 cuts makes 90deg. It gives a nice smooth flow without taking to long to make a bend.
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/5.jpg
First to bends created, To the Gas tank and then around it
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/3.jpg
My Flex pipe and ball flange
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/4.jpg
Hanging a little low because the DP is disconnect because of the HG job I'm doing
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/6.jpg
Fits Tight!
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/7.jpg
The only part not 3" is the muffler that will be replaced once my funds come back up!
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/8.jpg
Good Clearance around the tank
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/9.jpg
Finally th money pic!! See I'm represently Canada!! oh ya EH!
I've got good clearance over the LCA, just need to put my Sway bar back on.
http://www2.propichosting.com/Images/421618549/10.jpg

Over all it is much quiter then my 2.25 with Ricer Cannon Style muffler, I love the sound. I actually datalog boost coming in about 400rpm earlier so I'm REALLY HAPPY with it!! And who says muffler shops are required!!

I like. Real nice welds too. So you are just running a flex, piping, then muffler?

Weld were working good till I ran out of wire 15min after the store closed and had to borrow some .035. My little 110v welder I was using didn't like melting this thickness of wire so the welds after the muffler look like ----, but I'm replacing that. I want to go to a 3" magnaflow soon.

3" DP w/side exit for track to a 3" Carsound Cat to a 3" Ball Flange to a 3" Flex to 3" Pipe to a No Name 2.5 " Muffler.

Also it turns out that my brand new 3" Cat(30.00 bones off ebaY) from running rich for too long, No biggy, at least it still loks like I have a Cat on her. I'm going to wled a 3" pipe through it next time my DP is off so that all the exhaust doesn't get too turbulent in there.

You could have saved yourself a lot of trouble and ordered a mandrel bent tubing kit form VRS for $125 shipped. It does the trick I guess, and urine Canada.

Could have, but that would near double my cost, and this way, I can say I fabbed, my own exhaust COMPLETELY from scratch, showed of my welding and fabbing skills. Also for 125.00 I could have mandrels cheaper locally, but that still more costs.

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

You could have bought 1 mandrel U bend for 12 dollars and saved yourself about 45-60 mins in extra fab time. I'm not a big fan of whiteybends, but hell it works and its cheap so more power to ya ;)

a friend of mine has a 3" exhaust with just a 24" glasspack on it. sounds ------ awsome. i was thinking of doing the same thing when i get my new project going.

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

I just went with the 1 180 when i was ordering the bends to make my new exhaust. Works much better than cutting endless angles and welding them. Just gotta weigh your options. 45mins of work or $10.

Very nice job though. It looks good.

10 bucks. I'm in Canada, I paid 38.00 for my 180 making my DP. When you have a band saw, You start he up, walk away while it cutting and come back for a few minutes of welding. Sure it took my longer but not that bad. I changed my oil, put in a different rad, and thermostat while i did this.

Looks great,
I need a lot more practice to get my welds looking that nice, and you did it on a 110V also? May I ask what welder did you use?

Cray91 07-15-2005 03:39 AM

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

daaaaaamn that is way too much for a U-bend. I have a band saw and i would be willing to make my own if I had to pay that much american. Sucks to be in canadia I guess.

im so jealous of that band saw

awesome work on the exhaust man. it looks sick

looks good man! i want to do my own, but i don't have and can't find anyone to let me borrow a good chop saw or band saw :P btw, you can pick up a nice 3" muffler on ebay. i think mine was like 30 shipped, it's made by hooker. here's the one i have http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7967772934

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

Ya, I can find a decent muffler for an equivalent Canadian price here and no shipping costs.

Welder was a Lincoln Mig Pack. I just have alot of practice on shitty welder so I know how to set them hot and run my welds for good penetration. My last job had 1-2 shitty 550 Millers that had to be played with inorder to get it right, so I learned to was and listen to my welds to find out what needs to be changed.

I pick the band saw up a while ago for 225CAN. The Cheapest(and Crappy) Chopsaw was 170.00, Decent one is 200.00, and I hate chopsaw sparks, nothing like getting metal dust and peices cleaned out of you eyes at the ER!

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

werd. my dad had a peice BURN into his eye. had to get to the hospital asap for that one. he's fine but ---- like that is why i ALWAYS wear safety glasses and leather gloves and ear plugs if im doing alot of work and or in a smaller room.

bumblezc 07-15-2005 11:59 PM

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

Yup, nothing like having a drill taken to your eye and 3 check up to inspect for rust!!! I could see right for about 3 months!!!

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

Did you use the lincoln model with shealding gas? I would be surprised if this was sone with a flux core.. asking because I'm currently in the market for my very first welder for my turb project..

I wish I could get U-bends over here though..
over here one 3" 90 degree bend is $35 and up.
And they aren't real medrel bend though..they kinda shrink a bit in the bends.
You guys are lucky

Ya, there a little cheaper here, but still out of my college assed price range.

It was with shielding gas, but if you know how, flux core can be clean, especially if hit with a wire brush afterwards.

3" 90 bends in Mild Steel are like 3-4$ each here.
Heck if you wanted some and know anybody traveling from my neck of the woods Id send them to ya for free.

Im still trying to complete my exhaust but am stuck for some answers on the taper issue.

i hope ur not talking about that schedule 40 plumbing :-\

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

Nice work. A free flowing exhaust is key with turbo spool and making power.

Hell I run a 3" pipe from my turbo back with NOTHING in the way (muffler, or cat)

I'd definetly reccomend giving it a shot. My car is accually quiter at cruise than it was before with a muffler and the 3". Mild acceleration isn't bad at all, but WOT is damn loud :)

I dont know what Schedule H plumbing is but the ones I posted pics off are the costliest. Cause its 4mm thick walls. As you go down on the wall thickness it gets cheaper. You also have stainless steel bends, reducers, seamless Ts and other stuff. 90% of the stuff the guy makes is exported to the Dairy industry in the US and NZ.
Too bad I cant weld like that Kfab guy or Id be making manifolds ;D

To get back on Topic. A straight thru pipe would attract the cops here.
A simple DIY muffler makes a huge diffirence. A foot or two of Perforated 4" pipe surounded with steel wool and encased in a can does a gr8 job.

bumblezc 07-19-2005 11:46 AM

Re: Birth of my 3" exhuast!

Ya if the cops around here saw I had no muffler, I'd be in trouble bigtime!
