any b16 turbo's in here?

just wondering if anybody has had any experiences with a b16 turbo..set up's..and power? built blocks..stock blocks and 1/4 miles times..just bought a b16a2 short block..thinking of building it for boost with pistons and rods..stock bore...stock sleeves...but wondering if its worth it...anybodies 2cents will help..thanks

why wouldn't it be worth it? any b series is nice with boost.

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

i don't know..the torque differences maybe..or does the boost make up for the b16's weak low end

they can be very quick just boosting the stock block, but especially since you're talking about building it. forged rods and pistons you'll be able to push 15 psi all day, that will make for a very quick b16, i promise ;)

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

I have heard that the b16s weak low end is awesome for turboing because it allows you to connect to the pavement before some real power kicks in. Sometimes the lack of low end torque on a fwd car is a good thing. Im in the process of turboing my b16 too.

there's not enough lack of torque to keep you from not hooking up, i spin through 1st and 2nd on street tires.

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

I read a write up on someone who was autocrossing and he said the b16 turbo was by far the fastest because of the torque curve compaired to some of hondas torquer engines or this reason.

beau has a b16 in his race car, I think his fastest time was 11 something. I'm going to turbo my b16 just for shits and giggles until I can get my LS block finished. I need to find out what I'm going to drive when I blow the b16 though.

hey projekteg..is that your coupe with b16 turboed 11psi?
hows that running..whoopin on any cars.? i would like to run 11's but 12's will be good enough..i've seen a stock b16 in a race car shell of an eg run 10.9...thats pretty cool..but i'm sure his car only weighed about 1,800 lbs...

yeah, that's my car, it runs great, very fast on the street from a roll on and i beat a lot of cars, but i have shitty times right now at the track b/c i still have my stock clutch :P

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

ive got a 1st gen b16 in my 91 haych. completely stock engine. running 6psi ,t3 .48/.60 with a fmu. i dont launch very high b/c it will just light the tires up. but once i hit boost they start breaking loose in 1st, 2nd,and part of 3rd... thats one thing i like about the b16 u dont have the low end power to break the tires loose, but i did race a h22 swaped civic and he took me out of the hole. :-\ so guess he wasnt spinning that much. the extra wieght of that motor may have helped tho.

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

(leed) Dave has a turbo b16 and has been sporting it for several years now, same block, but he's probably on his 4th set of pistons. Simply to much boost and to much timing. I can honestly say he has pushed his b16a harder than most people, He knows the limits of a stock b16a more than probably anyone on here. His current setup is a SC61 on a stock b16a running 15-16psi pushing easily around 300whp. A SC61 turbo is very laggy on a b16a but has incredible top end.

damn..close to 300 hp on the stock block?..

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

bit late replying but just thought id say ive got a ef9 b16a1 stock block boosting 12psi with very little timming retard on the msd and using 440cc inj with safc2 controlling them with a t3 out of a renno21 turbo,
i havent had it tunned only what i have done by my spider senses,
and ive killed a scooby wrx, put a bmw m3 evo2 to shame,
and kept up with a 550bhp supra!
so yes boosting a b16 is worth it! ;D
and if your wondering about the timing in the uk we 98 octane at petrol stations :o

12psi on a stock block with a VAFC .. Has the compression been lowered or nething?

he said it was stock. i run 11 psi every day and drive 100 miles a day to work. i would run about 13 or 14, but i need a clutch so bad, raising the boost would only make it worse. people would be surprised what the stock blocks can handle, you just have to have it tuned good and not be scared.

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

ive got a stock block b16a1,
polished head b16a2,
and she runs 80miles hard every day, its all about tunning if you can contain x amount of boost and y amount of fuel and ignite it without it pinking or miss fire then whats there to go wrong ;D
now dont go away and wack her up to 30psi and go find that skyline that wanked on you, cos itll blow :o
use some common sense, but youll be suprised to how much you can run with a HMT set up ;D

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

projekteg's got bigger ballz than me for running it at 11psi! hah =) But thats because he used to be a "street pharmacist" and has some special grass growing in the back to buy him a new block if it blows on him... hah =) j/k

Like many of the guys have said, its all about tuning and some common sense. If you dont see the other guys boosting theirs to 15psi, you might not want to be the first to try unless 1) you know EXACTLY you are doing 2) you are on a dyno 3) you got so much money that its falling out of your pocket

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

this is probbaly.. really off topic.. or not? but i wanna boost my b16a, or atleast thats wut i think it is.. lol i bought my car with it in. and it only has about 30k on it so far.. but i dont kno if its a b16 or not..cuz on that metal part where its supposed to say.. its scratched out... anyways, i wanna boost my car. but im not sure wut i should change other than the pistons on it.. i have a list of mods. here :
B16A
JE 12:1 comp pistion
Type R cams
Type R valves
Crower Titan valve springs and retainers
port and polish
blue print and balanced
UR crank pully
Ngk blue spark plug wires
custom cold air intake
stright pipe
Type R B pipe
Center force clutch
Spoon fly wheel
OBD1 ECU

anu suggestions wut i should get/change.. to get ready for turbo kit? i wanna be able to get atleast 250 hp if thats possible on a everyday drive car.. and i want it to be reliable.

if u got any suggestions/answers that be swt.. sorry if i took over thread..? but its b16 and it may help other ppl.

thanx a lot
Jay

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

someone was building that car for ALL MOTOR huh with the 12:1 CR pistons... If you want to turbo it make sure you know what you are doing with that high of a compression ratio or at least someone who knows what the y are doing

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

i would change to some lower c/r pistons before i boosted it. as hrmmmm, engine serial number scratched out, i wonder why that is..........

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

yeah i have no idea why its scratched out.. but the numbers under the scratched out b16a is still there.. weird, but ppl always look and see wut my engine is.. lol wut happens when i change the pistons to a lower compression? will the car be slower/faster? cuz i know ill need a lil bit more money for turbo after i get new pistons

thanx

projekteg 08-26-2004 08:50 PM

Re:any b16 turbo's in here?

it will be slower until you put a turbo on it
