air/fuel gage

I have 2 bars into the rich side when I am just crossing but when I hit boost (1psi for now) the air fuel gage dosent register or if it does I am in the red on the lean side. what is cussing this? is my O2 sensor not fast enought or should I get a wide band O2? thanks

Re:air/fuel gage

What is causing this? Jesus man, your leaning the ---- out of it!!!!Stop it right now before you blow it up!!!

You need more fuel. I find it odd that it is leaning out at only 1 psi, but if the gauge is working properly and the 02 is good, your about a week away from blowing the ---- out of your motor. :o

Re:air/fuel gage

but doc, would my be runing hot or be detonating from the lack of fuel?

Dr.Boost 06-10-2003 06:35 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

It doesn't have to. If you are leaning out, you are leaning out. You need more fuel. Gas gas gas gas gas gas gas gas gas........

Does it backfire at all?

Re:air/fuel gage

I mean man, If I am running to bars into the rich and then at 1 psi it is leaning out? just dosent make sence. I drive a 1991 camry with a modded MAF and water temp sensor and it is still doing this. Man I need help :-[

Re:air/fuel gage

no, then again i am just running the exost right out from the turbo (no pipes)

tranceminister 06-10-2003 07:04 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

Just try to richen it up and see what happens. If it idles like ---- back it off a little. Air fuel guages aren't the most acurate way of monitoring A/F ratio, but it's better than nothing, so you may or may not be as lean as it say's you are. I would definately stay on the rich side for now and see what happens.

Re:air/fuel gage

you dont have any pipes off your turbo? WTF.........and by the way, detonation is not caused by running lean, its by running rich. So dont be looking for detonation as a sign of running lean my man :-\

high c 06-10-2003 09:08 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

so what should I do? ???

BoostedED9 06-10-2003 09:11 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

dont pay attention to the cheap a/f gagues. they are just a 30dollar light show, put a wideband on it and see what is really going on.

Dr.Boost 06-10-2003 09:12 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

What are you using for fuel management?

nothing now, i'm at 1psi

high c 06-10-2003 09:14 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

thats like going down the high way at 70 with ram air

high c 06-10-2003 09:15 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

what is a "wideband" going to do and how do i check it?

Dr.Boost 06-10-2003 09:52 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

A wideband is basicaly your a/f gauge, but 100x better and 500x more accurate. That way you can REALLY see what the a/f is like. I know the regular a/f gauges are junk, but it is a reference point. Plus I like all the pretty colors. :o J/K. :P

Also, you need fuel management of some sort. SOMETHING!!! and I don't think cruising down the road at 70 mph will create 1 psi. I read an article on this. I think it said you would have to be going like 230 mph for 1 psi. :(

dude, detonation is mainly caused by RUNNING LEAN. if it occurred while running rich, it would probably be the case that the octane rating was too low and pre-ignited for your compression ratio.

TURBO: RICH = SAFE, LEAN = BAD. ~12.5:1 = POWER. repeat this incessantly ;D

Re:air/fuel gage

ya I am going to go to the store today and get a wideband. As for mangment, what do you think I should use?

HMT-Admin 06-11-2003 02:24 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

Are you just gonna walk in Pep boys and ask for a wideband setup for your camry? ???

high c 06-11-2003 04:30 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

ya I tride that and, it did not work. I went to advanced, Vip and a sport tuning shop. I just wanted a wideband 02, mybe i will try ebay ;)

BoostedED9 06-11-2003 04:47 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

oh yea, the wideband costs upwards of 300 dollars.

high c 06-11-2003 08:54 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

do you think that the air fuel gage is not picking anything up because I am no running any exost pipes from the turbo and the O2 is isent have enought time to read it or that there is no back presher to keep the exost gases there long enough?

XDEep 06-11-2003 09:21 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

probably have a bad connection. at idle it should flicker up and down around the middle (.5v) and at WOT it should be at the top (0.7-0.9v)

BoostedED9 06-11-2003 09:32 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

narrow band a/f gauges are NOT ACCURATE, try and tune a car with one and see how long it lasts, then put a wideband on it and see how accurate you were.....

high c 06-11-2003 09:38 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

could I not just take my multi meter and hook it up to the o2 and tune it like that. My air fuel gage is ---- because I got the mix so rick i stalled the car and the gage still seid I was running lean >:(

XDEep 06-11-2003 10:33 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

yep thats what i do. i might try to just rip out the lcd of a cheap multimeter and remote mount it with an led backlight. yes take heed, its a very crude way to measure.

high c 06-12-2003 07:29 AM

Re:air/fuel gage

is there a not so crude way ???

Mark 06-12-2003 10:22 AM

Re:air/fuel gage

XDEep how exactly did you tune your car with a multimeter connected to the O2 sensor???

Same way you do with the AFC blue wire "mod". Monitor the O2 voltage and tune that way.

XDEep 06-12-2003 11:41 AM

Re:air/fuel gage

well under boost keep it rich. 0.8-0.9v+ until you get it on a wideband. monitor your exhaust gas temps with an egt. again, dont do this, its very crude and dumb. leave that to the impatient and crazy ones :P

high c 06-12-2003 03:07 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

so today I riped (and changed) the O2 and looked at all the conections and low and behold now when I hit boost the air fuel gage says i am in the green, but I dont trust it >:(

Semnos 06-12-2003 07:41 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

Your old O2 sensor might have been faulty.

high c 06-12-2003 08:12 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

ya thats what I'm think'in. do you think I should trust the air/fuel gage?

Dr.Boost 06-12-2003 09:09 PM

Re:air/fuel gage

About as far as you can throw it. ;)
