Air filter
hi,
What is the best air filter for an turbocharged 1.6i dohc crx (zc engine)? I know K&N has a great flow, but I've heard that they don't filter dust etc that good. What is a good air filter for a reasonable price ? |
Re:Air filter
I use K&N and it seems fine to me
|
Re:Air filter
who needs filters... ur car's prolly gonna blow up in less then 8 months depending on how u drive it and d series is cheap anyway. jus use screen mesh so you can get maximum spooling sound. its what everyonds using... join the trend.
|
Re:Air filter
i use a screen on my turbo... it filters out rocks and pebbles pretty good so far.
|
Re:Air filter
i must admit this is the only trend i follow :P
|
Re:Air filter
I'm not planning to blow up my engine, and if it does, i'd like to keep my turbo in one piece.
Just bought a air/fuel, oil temp, oil press, boost gauges and a HKS Type-1 turbo-timer to help me with this ;) |
Re:Air filter
a/f gauge isn't gonna save your motor dude. invest in a wideband.
|
Re:Air filter
true that.
|
Re:Air filter
i also ran a screen on my turbo, but wouldnt recomend it. maybe only at the track or something. if this is a daily driver u need a filter. particals small enough the fit through the screen will eventualy eat away at ur compressor wheel, and put little nicks in it. i would recomend K&N, but if u waunt something cheap go to ebay,u can find 3" cone filters there pritty cheap.

I used a cheap foam filter for my monte as you can see in the pics. It was €20.00 or something. I got it from Heuts. |
Re:Air filter
---- mesh! I ran that fucker wide open. Filters are for bitchass.

Also brand and type example ? |
Re:Air filter
you would be a fool if you bought a $500. wideband and ran it in your dailydriver 24/7. it could get stolen if you leave your car parked outside. a a/f gauge can't be used for tunning but it's a good cheap way to see if your car is running on the rich(safe) side or on the lean(blown motor)side.
|
Re:Air filter
who said anything about having a wideband in your car 24/7?
and not all widebands are $500 now-a-days. Its common knowledge that narrowband isn't gonna tell you anything usefull, so save your hard earned cash. i guess the light show would be amusing for E-tards. NNBD: theres a link you can check out about PLX widebands http://www.plxdevices.com/M-Series_productinfo.htm |
Re:Air filter
-daily driven with screen mesh crap for about 6-8 months now? same turbo, pulls jus as hard as it did when i started.
|
Re:Air filter
I've never ran a filter on any of my turbos, new or used. Right now my street is covered in dirt and rocks and ---- from the recent rain, but I've never lost a turbo(or a motor)to a rock. I also run without a timing belt cover(upper or lower). Maybe I'm just lucky?
K&N will stop dirt and dust if you use the oil supplied with the cleaning kit. __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Re:Air filter
25$ at the autocrap store down the road. And the light show provided by the AF guage is just that...a LIGHT show...in-car widebands with display sell for around 300$ now. The wideband unit is concealed and the display is a wire-lead display. Save your money, if you already spent it, just sell that bad boy on ebay and dont stress the use/need for one.

Re:Air filter
I used to run a screen, but it was too restrictive ::) no filter for me, she likes dust keeps it from glazing up. 8)
|
Re:Air filter
Do you guy's actually notice a difference without being on a dyno between filter selections? ::)
|
Re:Air filter
the only thing different between using a filter and not using one is the sound. i personally have no room the way my turbo is mounted to get a cone filter on, so right now im using nothing, one i can find a flat filter like a pancake one, then ill use one, but right now i dont care
|
Re:Air filter
haha, if anyone has seen my "INTAKE?" for my turbo...
http://www.2amracing.com/TURBOAGE.JPG I couldnt fit a cone filter...but I am a bit of a worrier. So I just got the flex pipe and the cone filter was a free-bee |
Re:Air filter
hey... whatever works!
|
Re:Air filter
hmmm if the A/F meters are crap...then why the ---- are they being build ?, and why does everyone recommend a a/f ratio meter ?
I was planning to do the fuelmapping with the help of some dyno runs. But another question, if i use a wideband.....than i don't have to go to the dyno to know what to adjust in my fuel maps ? And what ratio is safe for idle...and what ratio is safe for full trottle ? (without a needless thirsty car, I'm just a 19jr student in university mechanical engineering) |
Re:Air filter
Narrowband o2 sensors are not a reliable source to tune a vehicle with. Just because it is being sold doesn't mean it is a good product. ;)
If you want to paint a pretty picture on a dyno and use their wideband that will work, but you're better off buying your own wideband kit and tuning yourself. They aren't that expensive and are a grat tool to have around. I recommend the www.zeitronix.com kit, especially if you already own a laptop. It sounds like you need to do some more research. Some of your questions are a bit "noobish". __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Re:Air filter
a/f meters aren't crap. they're just not accurate to tune with since they don't have numbers, just lights. if your car is running lean you will be able to tell a difference with a a/f meter though. i know you guys say they suck but i saw a difference in my a/f before and after tunning.

Re:Air filter
hmm I'm doing research all i can, and yes I am a nooby. It's my first non-turbo car, that I'm going to turbocharge. (within a certain buget).
Also helping my brother to restore his porsche 924 turbo engine. Im learing from that too, but is a turbo car stock. (finally putting everything together 8) ). I also think it's good to have good equipment for yourself (My brother and I just bought a shitload of Facom and snappon tools once and for all), but if i don't know enough about chipping itself, and changing fuelmaps, the thing is pretty useless to me. If i knew exactly what i was doing regaring the chipping i would buy one. |

Re:Air filter
yes i can see that, but im pretty ------- bad with computers etc. I can understand most of the theory but a lot of terms are used and im still finding out what those mean. (Im dutch so....)
I'm more in control technique of industrial machines etc. Btw, im still looking for someone who can help me with chipping etc. If anyone think you can help me (and willing to to so), add me to your MSN: royhoeks@hotmail.com. It's not that im lazy, but usefull resources are always welcome |
